Workers in the entertainment industry have made a tentative deal with major recording companies to protect their rights and stop the unfair application of artificial intelligence (AI) in its use.
The “Sound Recordings Agreement” recently endorsed by SAG-AFTRA’s executive committee, which is a unanimous decision, spans the timeframe from 2021 to 2026.
The contract tackles the increasing issue of using AI technology to create digital likenesses of artists’ voices without their approval. Under the new rules, record companies are required to secure consent and pay royalties before distributing tracks with synthetic artist voices.
In addition, this accord specifically identifies “artists,” “vocalists,” and “royalty artists” as individual people, preserving music’s authenticity by anchoring it in genuine human creativity.
this deal not only brings improvements to health and retirement plans, but also broadens the share of streaming earnings that will be contributed. This extensive contract represents the industry’s dedication to safeguarding the interests of its valued workers and securing a balanced future amidst technological innovations.
In the upcoming weeks, it is expected that members will cast their final votes for approval. This significant step forward will usher in a new phase for artistic creativity and technological advancements, all while preserving the essential human aspects that keep the arts intriguing.
