By the end of 2024, Balatro stood out as the top indie game, successfully merging roguelike gameplay with poker. This unconventional concept proved to be a success, earning awards and surprising everyone as last year’s favorite title. Incredibly, enthusiastic fans have managed to create an unofficial version of this game for the Nintendo DS, demonstrating that these classic consoles can continue to thrive.
On GitHub, Haynster unveiled an impressive homemade version of the popular indie game initially released on Nintendo DS. However, it’s essential to note that this isn’t the full-fledged experience as some features are absent. The omitted aspects are outlined below, indicating that this is more about a fun novelty rather than a comprehensive Nintendo DS experience. Nonetheless, it promises to be an enjoyable brief period for those who still possess the classic handheld device.
As a gamer, I must admit that the experience I had with this game was somewhat lacking. It seems the creators forgot to add music, variety in decks, and the number of boss battles and jokers are quite limited – only 12 Boss Blinds and 15 Jokers to be exact.
Additionally, there’s an issue with the hand recognition system. For instance, if I were playing Balatro and had a pair and three other random cards, the game wouldn’t recognize that as a pair. I’ve tried every trick in the book, but it just didn’t seem to work. It feels like they could have taken a simpler route when developing the game, perhaps with more time they’ll improve it in the future.
1. It’s really motivating to witness this homemade version of Balatro, and it serves as a reminder of how incredible these gaming communities can be. The ability to revisit older systems and play games that are nearly as new is a delight for numerous gamers. Tekken 8 on PSP and Fallout on 3DS are outstanding examples of this.

As a gaming enthusiast, I must admit that while it’s fantastic to have console-quality games at our fingertips with devices like the Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck, there’s still a bittersweet nostalgia for those compact dual-screen handheld consoles. Despite this, we can relish in the fact that we can now enjoy the full version of Balatron on both the Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck, which is certainly a comfort to fans like myself.
