- Honor of Kings is announcing major esports news for 2025
- Off the back of its global release Honor of Kings is bringing an invitational to the Phillipines for the first time
- But the biggest news might be the adoption of the new ban&pick format globally.
2024 has been an exceptional year for Honor of Kings, marking a significant milestone with their worldwide release. As we move into 2025, they’ve got exciting updates planned for the next twelve months. Notably, a new invitational series will make its debut in the Philippines from February 21st to March 1st, and more crucially, global ban&pick will be implemented for the season three invitational and all future tournaments.
In simpler terms, when you say “Ban & Pick,” you’re referring to a strategy in competitive gaming where each team gets to ban one character from being played by both teams, and then pick one character to play themselves. Once a hero is used by one team during a match, that hero cannot be selected again by the same team for the rest of the tournament, but it remains available for their opponents to choose.
In most Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) games, players tend to focus on a limited number of characters they excel at, rather than diversifying their skills across many. For instance, popular League of Legends figure Tyler1 is almost synonymous with his favored champion, Draven. This narrow specialization can be considered a unique spin on the game’s formula.
The mother of invention
It’s understandable why Ban & Pick has gained so much traction among MOBAs. While Honor of Kings isn’t the original to implement this concept, games like League of Legends and even Rainbow Six Siege have followed suit with similar regulations. However, in most cases, the bans are pre-agreed upon by the team, unlike Ban & Pick where the ban phase occurs during the game itself.
In this scenario, the decision lies with each player, emphasizing team harmony. Should you select a character ideal for specific situations, even if your teammate excels with it? Or should you opt for your preferred character to gain early victories, or save them for crucial moments? This approach certainly adds intrigue to Honor of Kings esports for potential new spectators.
