- The Esports World Cup has wrapped, with Honor of Kings’ appearance seeing KPL crowned champs
- They’ll join LGD Gaming in taking home a share of the $3m prize pool
- And that’s not all, as right around the corner is the main Championship in Indonesia
As a seasoned gamer who’s been through countless esports tournaments and championships, I must say that the Esports World Cup of Honor of Kings has certainly caught my attention. The $3m prize pool at the inaugural event in Riyadh was nothing short of impressive, and it’s always thrilling to see Korean competitors KPL Dream Team crowned as champions.
After the conclusion of the Esports World Cup, the champions of Honor of Kings’ own tournament were crowned as the KPL Dream Team from Korea. Both they and LGD Gaming will receive a significant portion of the $3 million prize pool at this first-time event held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
In 2024, the Honor of Kings esports season isn’t wrapping up just yet. Instead, we’re looking forward to the Honor of Kings Championship scheduled for October. This global event will bring together 16 top-tier teams from across the globe. The action takes place in Indonesia, where these squads will battle it out using the popular MOBA, all vying for a chance at the $1m prize pool.
You may remember that the Esports World Cup is the first of its kind, spinning out from Saudi Arabia’s Gamers8 event. It’s attracted attendees from numerous high-profile games like PUBG Mobile, Free Fire and, of course, Honor of Kings.
Will the Esports World Cup stick?
It appears that having Honor of Kings as a precursor to its main championship in October could be both beneficial and challenging. On the positive side, it offers an earlier opportunity for competition. However, its associated prize pool is relatively smaller compared to the main championship.
From the outset, it’s been evident that the Esports World Cup serves multiple purposes – primarily a promotional strategy by developers and the Saudi Arabian government to establish their nation as a hub for esports. However, one may wonder if this initiative will succeed or if it’s merely an extravagant, impractical investment?
