Spectators have the opportunity to re-experience the charm of Hickory’s underdog basketball team executing the picket fence play once more, as portrayed in the iconic movie “Hoosiers.” This timeless sports film directed by David Anspaugh continues to captivate both viewers and critics, demonstrated by its high Rotten Tomatoes ratings. Now, “Hoosiers” is experiencing a revival on streaming platforms. On March 12, the movie featuring Gene Hackman, Dennis Hopper, and Barbara Hershey climbed up Prime Video’s Top 10 Movies in the United States to the ninth spot.
The movie “Hoosiers” was based on a true story about an Indiana basketball team from Milan High School who won the state championship in 1954. Throughout his successful acting career, Hackman made many memorable movies, but “Hoosiers” stands out as one of the greatest sports films ever made. The film received glowing reviews from critics, earning a “Certified Fresh” rating of 91% on the Tomatometer. Audiences also loved it, giving it an 88% score on Rotten Tomatoes based on over 50,000 ratings.
In the movie “Hoosiers,” Hopper earned a nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role as the character Wilbur Flatch, affectionately known as Shooter. The film also received another Oscar nomination for Jerry Goldsmith’s exceptional musical score. Unfortunately, despite these accolades, the movie didn’t win any awards at the 1987 ceremony. However, it was Maris Valainis who truly captivated audiences as the basketball prodigy Jimmy Chitwood. His extraordinary skills on the court and his strong bond with Coach Norman Dale (played by Hackman) were crucial in helping Hickory defeat their formidable opponents, the South Bend Central Bears, in an incredible underdog victory.
Gene Hackman Grew Up a Real-Life Hoosier
The classic movie “Hoosiers” is forever etched as one of Gene Hackman’s finest performances, and it ranks among the most gripping sports films ever made. As an A-list actor, Hackman skillfully imbued his character, Coach Norman Dale, with a sense of authenticity. This wasn’t merely an acting feat; Hackman had a personal connection to the role, having spent much of his youth in Danville, Indiana.
Indeed, during the filming of his movie, Hackman encountered a woman who turned out to be a childhood friend of his mother, who had passed away. This encounter was deeply moving for the actor from Indiana, as he had moved away from the state when he was just 16 years old. In an interview with KCRA News 3 in Sacramento at that time, Hackman shared this emotional experience.
On the initial day of filming, we found ourselves in a quaint town named New Richmond. A woman approached me then, sharing that she had known my mom as a child in Danville. A few days later, she presented me with photographs of her and my mother. It was quite moving because my mother perished in a fire, leaving our family albums charred and destroyed. Consequently, these images are the only ones I possess of my mother now.
Regrettably, Hackman passed away in February at the age of 95. Yet, his memory and extraordinary acting legacy will continue through his memorable stage, television, and film performances. Devoted fans, or those yet to watch the movie, can stream Hoosiers on Prime Video, and AMC+ subscribers can also enjoy this classic basketball tale. Additionally, the must-see sports flick is available for purchase or rental on standard VOD platforms.
