Over the past seven days, it seems like every other headline is about postponed multiplayer games. While this type of game was once seen as a treasure trove, recent developments suggest that success in this field has been elusive rather than abundant.
It was reported that there were plans to scrap a God of War game, The Last of Us multiplayer, and another Sony-owned franchise as well. However, this other project was initially slated for cancellation prior to being called off.
Horizon Zero Dawn MMORPG Cancelled?
As reported by MTN News (via VGC) and NCSoft has announced, several games in development across three different studios have been halted. One of these projects, referred to as “H“, was intended to be a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) set within the universe of Guerrilla Games’ Horizon Zero Dawn series.
Even though no details about game H were provided when the cancellation was made public, Video Game Chronicle (VGC) speculates that it might be the Horizon title, given that NCSoft revealed a partnership with Sony for developing certain games as far back as 2023.
According to reports, it appears that some developers who were part of the specific project have moved on from NCSoft, while others have been reassigned to focus on different games that are still in development.
Horizon is Primed for a Multiplayer
The Horizon franchise primarily revolves around Aloy’s journey, yet its post-apocalyptic landscape teeming with machines and rich lore makes it an ideal backdrop for a vast, open-world game. As of now, developers have kept mum about their projects, but fans can easily imagine a game where players could establish their own tribes, traverse a common world, and battle various mechanical beasts.
The idea could’ve been great, but given that the live service genre has been waning with games like “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League” incurring significant losses, Sony might have chosen to halt production rather than continue investing in what could potentially be a flop upon its release.
What’s On the Horizon
As a fellow gaming enthusiast, I gotta say, while the multiplayer progress might be on hold right now, there’s a whole lot brewing for the Horizon universe. Just last week, I heard some exciting news – they’re making a Horizon movie! It’s being developed by Columbia Pictures and PlayStation Production. Can’t wait to see how it unfolds!
Although no specific details have been shared yet, considering the high-quality productions of games such as The Last of Us and Fallout, it’s possible that the upcoming Horizon movie might serve as an enticing introduction to the series, capturing the interest of even more fans.
As a gamer, I can’t help but feel that Horizon would truly shine on the silver screen. The grandeur of a big-budget film is what’s needed to fully immerse viewers into this captivating world. If simplified, the story could comfortably fit within a two-hour movie runtime. Even the high-speed adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog have managed to enthrall audiences across three films.
Regarding games, it appears Guerrilla Games may still be dealing with the impact of Forbidden West’s underperformance, but perhaps we can expect them to unveil the next Horizon installment in a couple of years.
The Horizon games are currently available for PlayStation and PC.
