Horror Director Mike Flanagan Addresses Possible DCU Project

As a dedicated fan of Mike Flanagan‘s work, I am beyond thrilled by the prospect of his potential involvement in the DC Universe. With his exceptional talent for crafting chilling and captivating horror stories, Flanagan is a master storyteller who has proven time and again that he can breathe new life into beloved properties.

In the coming months, it seems that renowned horror director Mike Flanagan might be discussing a potential project within the DC Universe. While Flanagan didn’t divulge specific details, he hinted at the possibility of collaborating with James Gunn and Peter Safran on their revamped superhero venture. It’s intriguing to think that he could lend his talent to one of DC’s horror-influenced characters.

According to ScreenRant, Flanagan attended Fan Expo Canada in 2024 where he discussed a recent encounter he had with producer Peter Safran in Paris during his vacation. It seems that Flanagan wasn’t just enjoying a holiday with his partner and frequent collaborator Kate Siegel. When asked about the meeting, Flanagan revealed:

1. “I’ve consistently admired James Gunn, both as an individual and a director, and I’d jump at the opportunity to join his creative world. Plus, it’s always been a fun ride with him.”

The conversation didn’t stop at that point. Later on, Flanagan was inquired about his preferred DC characters, but his response was anything but straightforward. As of now, the details are tightly sealed, and he shows no signs of disclosing a project that remains theoretical. However, he did give ScreenRant a significant hint:

“Which characters are my favorites? Well, if I tell you that, it just might end up on ScreenRant. [Laughs] But I can’t reveal anything. If you dig deep enough online, you’ll find out who they are. To directly answer your question, I truly adore everyone over there.”

Flanagan’s upcoming project strays from the realm of superheroes and dives into the chilling world of horror instead. He is currently working on an unnamed movie within the ‘Exorcist’ series, set to hit theaters in March 2026. This change comes after the cancellation of a trilogy spearheaded by David Gordon Green following the lackluster response to 2023’s ‘The Exorcist: Believer’. Further details about Flanagan’s contribution to the ‘Exorcist’ universe are being kept secret, but he assures us that it will be a terrifying ride. Needless to say!

What Would a Mike Flanagan Superhero Film Look Like?

Mike Flanagan possesses a unique approach to filmmaking and storytelling. His films often bear his signature touch, owing to the development of a cinematic dialect, frequent collaboration with a specific group of actors, and a comfort zone in the horror genre. While he doesn’t deviate far from common sub-genres, Flanagan’s skillful portrayal of supernatural horror sets him apart, placing him among the key contemporary figures in horror cinema. In fact, Stephen King himself acknowledges Flanagan as a master at adapting his works.

Adapting a darker superhero story is the easy answer to what Flanagan could do in the superhero genre. IPs like Constantine, Swamp Thing, and Justice League Dark are horror-themed stories in the DC universe that could be revamped. However, we did what Flanagan said and Googled. What we found isn’t exactly a confirmation of what Flanagan will do next, but back in November 2022, after a studio meeting, the filmmaker revealed his favorite superhero and the DC movie he was hoping to discuss. This is an excerpt of his answer to a Tumblr question:

Initially, our plan was to discuss DC Comics, exploring any potential opportunities related to it. Specifically, I was eager to delve into the concept of a terrifying Clayface film and share insights on my preferred superhero – Superman.

No one has brought Clayface to the big screen in live action, and we’d love to see Flanagan’s take on this incredible Batman villain.

Mike Flanagan’s newest movie, titled “Chuck’s Life Story“, adapted from a Stephen King novella, is scheduled for its debut on September 6 at the Toronto International Film Festival.
