House Of The Dragon Fans Are All Saying The Same Thing About Season 2’s Daemon Sex Scene

As a longtime fan of the “Game of Thrones” universe, I have grown accustomed to the raw and often disturbing content that the stories encompass. However, even with my preparedness for such elements, I find myself utterly perplexed by the controversial scene in “House of the Dragon” Season 2’s Episode 5.

“Game of Thrones” is known for its abundant nudity and sexual content, with some actors expressing criticism towards the explicit scenes. The spin-off series, “House of the Dragon,” has continued this trend, leaving some fans uncomfortable. In the second season’s third episode, an scene was particularly disturbing for viewers. In the fifth episode, titled “Regent,” Daemon (Matt Smith) shares a provocative dream sequence with his mother, Alyssa Targaryen (Emeline Lambert). Though it was just a dream, many fans found the explicit content distasteful and took to social media to voice their disapproval.

X, previously referred to as Twitter, was the target of much criticism, with one user stating, “I never imagined I’d express this aloud, but no one truly requires a vivid dream of incest involving a character’s parent. It could have been a conversation instead.” Daemon had never met his mother, who passed away when he was just three years old. There seemed to be an exchange between them, with Alyssa commending her son, “Daemon, you’ve always been the strong one.” In his delusion, Daemon received the approval he longed for, but the disturbing element of incest only added to the revolting nature of the experience.

Incest has always been part of “Game of Thrones,” but this scene seems to have taken things too far for many. Users like @VISVNYA didn’t mince words: “There’s something so sinister about showing [D]aemon doing this to his mother — that he lost at a very young age mind you — f*** [H]arrenhal, f*** [A]lys and f*** the writers for real wtf???”

House of the Dragon fans are over Daemon’s hallucinations

The Targaryen family tree in Game of Thrones has long included incestuous relationships, such as Daemon’s marriage to his niece Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy). This intricate family dynamic is a common theme, and despite Daemon’s hallucinations this season caused by Alys Rivers (Gayle Rankin), the most striking instance yet is this disturbing family connection.

Raosahab217 brings up an valid observation that one statement took the scene a step further for some viewers: “I was enjoying this part until she said ‘My favorite son.’ [‘House of the Dragon’] always manages to shock me.” On the other hand, others didn’t find it more scandalous than past instances in the franchise. Tearymermaid puts it this way: “Why is everyone making such a big deal about this? It’s just Alys manipulating Daemon’s mind, not like he was fantasizing about having a sexual relationship with his mother.”

After two episodes in “House of the Dragon” Season 2, Daemon has largely been sidelined from the primary storyline and has been having hallucinations instead. Fans are eager for him to demonstrate why he’s a formidable fighter on the show. A Twitter user @neeeks_k quipped, “Everyone seems as fed up with [Daemon’s] subplot at Harrenhal as I am… let’s get him out of there and have him face off against Aemond and Vhagar instead!” Given that we’ve seen the devastation Aemond’s dragon is capable of, it could make for an exciting confrontation between Daemon and his own dragon Caraxes if Daemon manages to regain his senses.
