House of the Dragon Fans Aren't Impressed With This Week's 'Controversial' Scene

As a long-time fan of George R.R. Martin’s world and HBO’s epic fantasy series “Game of Thrones,” I have grown accustomed to the grandeur, intrigue, and intense action that comes with each new episode. So when I sat down to watch the latest installment of “House of the Dragon,” titled “Regent,” I was taken aback by its departure from the usual formula.

The following article contains SPOILERS for Season 2, Episode 5 of House of the Dragon.

I was taken aback by the last episode of House of the Dragon titled “Regent.” It wasn’t like any previous installments I’ve seen, and it felt a bit different from the usual dragon battles and violence we’ve come to expect from HBO’s fantasy masterpiece. Instead, it introduced a controversial romantic scene that has sparked intense reactions among fans. It wasn’t the content of the scene that upset people, but rather what it revealed about Daemon’s inner thoughts. Perhaps some viewers were caught off guard, but were we really that surprised? After all, this is a complex and nuanced story set in the Targaryen dynasty, and character development often involves exploring the depths of their emotions and motivations.

In the episode, Daemon remains inside Harrenhal’s dismal and ruined castle, overseeing its repairs while striving for dominance over neighboring houses. However, his efforts face resistance, causing him distress that negatively impacts his sleep. Suddenly, Daemon appears next to a stunning Targaryen woman who affectionately touches him in a romantic manner. Unfortunately, she is unveiled as his mother, Alyssa (portrayed by Emeline Lambert), leaving Daemon astonished due to the unexpected emergence of an Oedipus Complex during a nightmare. Even dedicated fans of “House of the Dragon” have expressed their disapproval on social media platforms like Twitter regarding this controversial scene.

On top of the ‘ick factor,’ all of Daemon’s sequences, dreams, hallucinations, and interactions have become pretty repetitive. Of course, fans were also quick to point this out, as well as ask how, after five episodes, he’s still in Harrenhal…

The latest episode of “House of the Dragon” by Regent felt unlike the typical installment due to the scarcity of battle scenes and graphic violence. Instead, it was reminiscent of a thought-provoking drama, pausing the action and grandeur to concentrate on essential character growth. This episode proved particularly enlightening in terms of Daemon Targaryen’s development, who resides in the spookiest castle across Westeros and has chosen to unveil his authentic self.

House of the Dragon Season 2 is No Longer About Heirs, But Power

In episode 5 of “House of the Dragon” season 2, there was more than just debated dream sequences and controversies. Luckily, Aegon survived, although his recovery status remains uncertain. The healers are working diligently, but Alicent has given up hope and suggests taking over as ruler during this time. However, the council refuses her proposal, and Aemond, the second in line for the throne, is installed instead.

As a long-time fan of epic fantasy series, I’ve seen my fair share of power struggles and political machinations. But nothing quite prepared me for the masterclass in subterfuge and manipulation that unfolded before my eyes in the latest episode of this show. Aemond’s grand scheme was finally brought to light, alas it wasn’t as if it had been hidden from all and sundry. Ser Criston Cole and the council members were privy to his plans, but not Alicent. Her realization of this fact was a heart-wrenching moment, captured in a close-up shot that seemed to magnify her despair. It was Olivia Cooke’s finest scene yet in this season, and I couldn’t help but feel for her character as she came to terms with the knowledge that this tragic turn of events could have been prevented. The intricacies of courtly politics never cease to amaze me!

As a gamer in King’s Landing, I can feel the simmering tension among the common folk. Aemond’s brutal actions haven’t helped quell the unrest. But there’s a glimmer of hope on the horizon. I’ve heard whispers of someone arriving from Dragonstone – an emissary, no less! And to my surprise, she’s one of Rhaenyra’s trusted maids, Elinda.

In the final moments of the episode, Jacaerys and I engage in a pivotal discussion with significant implications for the ongoing power struggle: there aren’t many unadulterated Targaryens capable of mounting dragons. Could we potentially discover more riders from the lineage, amplifying our dragon-borne might?
