House of the Dragon Revives Fan-Favorite Character for Episode 6

As a dedicated fan of House of the Dragon, I couldn’t help but be thrilled by the latest episode, “Smallfolk.” The unexpected appearance of King Viserys I Targaryen, played brilliantly by Paddy Considine, was a much-needed reminder of one of my favorite characters from the first season.

In the latest installment of “House of the Dragon,” titled “Smallfolk,” an unexpected appearance by a beloved character from the show graced our screens. Fans were taken aback — and it was none other than the wise and just King Viserys I Targaryen, played by Paddy Considine. Although we didn’t get the comeback we hoped for, it was still a treat to see him don his iconic crown during a brief scene where he offers guidance to his unstable brother Daemon.

Daemon continues to grapple with his troubled past as he becomes ensnared in Harrenhal’s haunting environs. Previously, we watched as he spiraled into insanity, hallucinating apparitions like a young Rhaenyra (excellent portrayal by Milly Alcock) and engaging in an uncomfortable scene with his mother. Most unsettlingly, he now encounters the spirit of his deceased brother. Yet, Viserys’ words hold no novelty for Daemon. In fact, they echo something his brother had shared with him at the onset of the series.

The deceased king rekindles the debate over why he named Rhaenyra as his heir instead of Daemon, sparking fierce discussions. All of Daemon’s encounters with spirits and delusions have caused him to ponder deeply about his existence, declaring aloud in the last episode that he desires to claim the Iron Throne, disregarding birthrights and designated heirs. When Viserys reaffirms his decision to select Rhaenyra over Daemon once more, the prince remains silent, enduring the agony of being forced to relive this distressing moment. However, Viserys collapses in tears, embraced by his brother. Daemon awakens from the nightmare, only to find himself confined within his recollection of uncontrollable rage and disdain for his brother’s decision.

Yes, Daemon Still Hasn’t Left Harrenhal

In the remainder of the episode, Daemon makes efforts to depart from Harrenhal, but Alys manages to persuade him to remain. Her influence isn’t magical in nature, yet she exerts a certain control over him and his mental stability. Daemon hasn’t experienced much success in Harrenhal, as his presence there has been largely unproductive. However, the depiction of a distraught Daemon in “Smallfolk” provides a glimpse into the prince’s troubled state. His confrontation with his brother served as the catalyst for him to take action. The issue at hand is what move Daemon will make next? Rhaenyra doesn’t rely on him for backing, but Harrenhal remains pivotal since it could sway the balance of power between factions.

In just two episodes remaining, Aegon remains silent about Aemond’s actions towards him. His substitute is a dangerous and unpredictable killer. Brace yourselves for violence, as tensions rise in King’s Landing. The common folk express their discontent, while Rhaenyra’s recent strategy causes the Hightowers to lose favor. Next Sunday will reveal whether there’s chaos or if Daemon departs from Harrenhal. An appearance by Viserys would certainly add to the drama, considering he needs to inform Alicent of her regrettable mistake.
