House of the Dragon Stars Debunk Romance Fan Theories Between Allicent and Rhaenyra

To put it mildly, the dynamics among characters can get quite intricate, but the bond between Allicent (played by Olivia Cooke) and Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) could very well be the knottiest of them all.

They started off as close friends during their childhood years, but a shift occurred when Alliscence became convinced that Viserys (Paddy Considine) was planning to place his son on the throne instead of Rhaenysa, his daughter. This development sparked conflict, yet even amidst the ensuing strife, there seemed to be an inexplicable bond between Alliscence and Rhaenysa. The cast of ‘House of the Dragon’ were queried about this peculiar connection, but their responses were rather ambiguous.

In the second season, Allicent subtly proposes a getaway with Rhaenyra, hinting at their possible romantic feelings towards each other. Since the beginning of the show, fans have speculated about the romantic undertones in their friendship, but it’s unclear how this aspect will unfold. Moreover, during Season 2, there was a scene between Rhaenyra and Mysaria that confirmed Rhaenyra’s attraction towards women, which is an original concept introduced in the series.

Although Rhaenyra might identify as bisexual, Allicent appears not to share the same inclination. Given that her son took the life of Rhaenyra’s, it seems highly unlikely for them to engage in a romantic relationship. However, Matt Smith stated that he was “unaware of any such developments.

D’Arcy expressed doubt about whether she was capable enough for the role, leaving it ambiguous if she meant herself or her character. She and Cooke then decided that a romantic storyline between their characters would result in additional tension, which the rest of the cast concurred with. “It’s an odd question,” Cooke commented.

One Writer Wants Allicent and Rhaenyra Together

As a devoted fan, I must acknowledge that George R.R. Martin, the mastermind behind Alicent and Rhaenyra, may not have initially envisioned their bond as a romantic one. However, from my perspective, there seems to be an intriguing hint of something more complex between these two characters. This perspective is echoed by Sara Hess, one of the show’s writers, who suggests that their relationship carries a subtle, almost “queer” essence.

In 2022, Hess expressed that no matter if one views it as a perspective or simply as deeply emotional friendships common among young women, grasping this aspect is crucial for understanding their entire relationship. Despite the fact that they are separated by various societal, systemic factors and stressors, their bond originated in childhood, and that profound love persists.

She continued by saying, “Olivia claims they share a theory – what she calls her ‘headcanon’ – suggesting that at one point, they shared a passionate moment which Alicent’s mother discovered and strictly forbade. This is the backstory Olivia has created, explaining her disapproval of their relationship from then on. I fully support this narrative.

It seems that there’s a glimmer of hope for Allicent/Rhaenyra with Hess joining forces, but the actors seem to be skeptical about this development.

House of the Dragon is streaming on Max.
