How a ‘Big Mess’ Scene Changed Scarlett Johansson’s Mind About The Avengers

As a movie enthusiast, I can confidently say that Iron Man was poised to become one of the greatest films ever made. It was a risky venture, as the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe hinged on its quality. The Avengers served as the grand payoff, but one of the film’s stars harbored doubts during production.

From Iron Man 2 onwards, she found it hard not to chuckle at the actors’ appearances during filming. Additionally, she noticed a lack of harmony among the characters, as they originated from distinctly different storylines.

Initially, when we introduced the first Avengers team, none of us could anticipate its immense potential, the actress admitted. Iron Man turned out to be a blockbuster hit, a massive success that laid the foundation for Marvel Studios. Iron Man 2 was also successful. Thor was present, but his character seemed to belong to a completely different cinematic universe due to a significantly contrasting tone compared to the Iron Man films. The Captain America movie had its unique identity as well. When you combined all these characters, together with Hulk and Hawkeye, it honestly felt like an overwhelming mixup.

However, it wasn’t the case. The Avengers was indeed a massive success, paving the way for current-day sequels. Coming next is Avengers: Doomsday, where Robert Downey Jr. reprises his role as Doctor Doom and teams up the Fantastic Four, Thunderbolts, and X-Men.

Johansson pondered, “It felt like madness on the set, we all seemed a bit insane. I’m not sure anyone knew if this would succeed or not, except for Kevin Feige and Joss Whedon. Yet, the cast placed their trust in them, blindly.” However, as it happened, that faith was well-placed.

One Scene Helped Change Johansson’s Mind

Johansson first began to warm up to the film during the memorable scene where every Avenger stands in a circle. “I recall that moment when all our characters were interconnected,” she stated. “This was the instant we all felt this might succeed. It carried a sense of power. When we saw the playback, it seemed impressive, but much of it didn’t feel impressive during filming.”

Despite some issues, there were numerous positive aspects of the event. We were all quite young and carefree, and it turned out to be an incredibly enjoyable experience, one that we all really enjoyed.

In a different conversation, Johansson shared her thoughts on potentially reprising Black Widow: “It’s challenging for me to imagine how her return could fit logically within the narrative I’ve been a part of.” She further expressed her longing to be with her co-stars again but emphasized that the character’s story has reached its conclusion. “I don’t want to compromise that. Fans, too, it’s essential for them,” she added.
