For over two and a half decades now, Blade stands as one of the most influential comic book adaptations ever created. Before the release of Spider-Man, X-Men films, and Iron Man, it demonstrated that a novel interpretation of a relatively unknown superhero could generate considerable success at the cinema.
Currently, we acknowledge the influence of “Blade,” yet it doesn’t quite fit into the category of expansive shared universe mega-franchises prevalent in today’s genre. Instead, it presents a solitary character within its own distinct world. However, it’s important to note that “Blade” did contemplate venturing beyond its boundaries. In fact, one of Marvel’s significant vampire characters almost joined the Daywalker in his initial cinematic debut, airing on SYFY this weekend.

How Morbius almost appeared in Blade
2022 marked the debut of Marvel’s “Living Vampire”, Dr. Michael Morbius, in his own movie “Morbius” starring Jared Leto. However, this wasn’t the first time Morbius was planned for the big screen. As revealed in the DVD commentary for “Blade”, writer David S. Goyer originally intended Morbius to appear as the antagonist for a potential sequel. In fact, there is an alternate ending where director Stephen Norrington dressed as Morbius (recognizable by his long black hair) stands on a rooftop, but this scene was removed before “Blade” hit theaters.
The cameo would have been groundbreaking, not only marking the beginning of comic book movie stingers establishing larger shared universes, but also introducing Morbius to the big screen over two decades before he actually appeared. This could have significantly altered the course of Blade’s journey as a comic book character. Unfortunately, the scene was cut and can only be found in low-quality versions on YouTube, offering just a fleeting glimpse – a small remnant of a story that never fully developed.
Why Morbius never appeared in the Blade trilogy
As a gamer, I’m curious about the turn of events. Even though the revised ending for Blade didn’t include Morbius initially, Goyer had plans to introduce him in a potential sequel. However, it’s puzzling why, after returning four years later to script Blade II, his vision didn’t materialize as intended.
As a devoted fan, I’ve learned from Den of Geek’s reports that it was Guillermo del Toro who ultimately took the reins to direct Blade II, with David S. Goyer clarifying this in his comments on the film. There were rumors that Sony Pictures were hesitant to let Morbius, a character related to Spider-Man, be used in another production due to their ownership rights (even though Spider-Man hadn’t debuted in theaters when Blade was released). However, Goyer pointed out that del Toro was more captivated by the prospect of introducing a new villain, the Reaper vampires, for use in his Blade II script. As a result, Morbius was put on hold and didn’t see the light of day until 2022.
