As a seasoned gamer of “Blue Bloods”, I have to say that the latest episode, “Without Fear or Favor,” has left me with a sense of intrigue and anticipation that goes beyond just catching the bad guy of the week. The introduction of Christopher Granger (Jake Weber) seems to be setting up a new dynamic that could potentially shake things up in the series.

Occasionally, character Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg) works with a partner other than Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez). He’s had intense confrontations with acquaintance Anthony Abetemarco (Steve Schirripa), and he faced a significant cultural conflict with the southern Major Waylon Gates (Lyle Lovett). In the episode “Without Fear or Favor,” Danny encounters the rather British Christopher Granger (Jake Weber). Granger criticizes Danny’s use of the English language; Danny finds Granger to be pretentious. However, they share a common goal: catching a criminal, which takes priority over their differences.
In this episode, it’s not unusual that Danny and Granger encounter a cultural disagreement, reluctantly cooperate for the case, catch the internationally connected villain before it’s too late, and end up almost as friends. This is reminiscent of previous “Blue Bloods” guest partner scenarios, but there seems to be a deliberate setup for Granger’s character. Could it be that he’s being positioned to lead the upcoming spin-off series, similar to how Danny was once considered for such a role?
The episode goes out of its way to establish Granger as a good man
Let’s examine the portrayal; Christopher Granger appears intelligent, moral, and articulate on “Blue Bloods.” He exhibits authority, and the case he presents in the episode is unusual as it pushes Danny out of his New York comfort zone. It’s not common for him to work with Interpol, but he handles it effectively. Similarly, Granger adapts well to life in America.
Could it be that the franchise is considering expanding internationally? Given the local roots and community focus of “Blue Bloods,” it’s plausible to think about such a move. For instance, “NCIS” originally centered around life in Washington D.C., but has since grown into a global franchise. If a similar spin-off for Granger were to happen on CBS (which hasn’t been announced yet), it could explore a fish-out-water scenario with him in America or even establish an agency for him in England. However, there’s also the chance that his character might not reappear like some of Danny’s guest agents.
Will Granger go the way of Lyle Lovett’s Major Waylon Gates?
Christopher Granger seems to evoke in viewers memories of Danny’s previous partnership with Waylon Gates (Lyle Lovett), who has featured on “Blue Bloods” four times, assisting him in his quest for justice. Granger debuted during Season 10, aiding Baez and Danny in the hunt for the Lone Star Killer. He reappeared in Season 12’s episode titled “Old Friends,” where Gates attempted to help Danny prevent a massive influx of illegal drugs from reaching the streets.
As a dedicated gamer, I was pumped when Gates made his comeback during Season 13, and in “Close to Home,” he teamed up with Danny again, bringing a drug cartel member to justice. However, since then, there’s been no sign of Gates. Maybe we’ll see him again in Season 14, but it seems like his previous appearances were more like trial runs that didn’t quite take off. Could the same happen to Granger? Or will he become the main character in an entirely new series? Only time and the upcoming CBS upfronts can provide the answers.
