After watching all 26 episodes of The Punisher across both seasons, I’m even more convinced that Daredevil: Born Again will flawlessly replicate a storyline that Frank Castle has encountered numerous times in his past. The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has been integrating characters from the Netflix Marvel series at an increasing rate, with Jon Bernthal’s portrayal of The Punisher being particularly well-received. While it’s clear that we haven’t seen the last of these characters joining the MCU, Frank Castle’s return is still eagerly anticipated.
In my opinion, the captivating first season of Daredevil: Born Again marked the return of our beloved hero, but what truly excites me is the news that The Punisher will be making appearances beyond this series. It’s been announced that a standalone spinoff for this hardened anti-hero is in development. Furthermore, the way Daredevil: Born Again season 1 concludes Castle’s storyline seems to hint at a repetition of a narrative that has proven effective throughout his long-running television saga.
The Punisher’s Storylines Tend To Follow A Gripping Trend
The Punisher’s Enemies Take Some Specific Directions
In both “The Punisher” and Jon Bernthal’s earlier role in “Daredevil” as Frank Castle, the stories consistently followed a pattern when choosing who Castle would confront. Initially, Daredevil made Castle fight adversaries who could be seen as reflections of Castle’s own narrative and motivations. For instance, Finn Cooley from the Irish mob was chosen as an opponent for Castle. This was significant because Castle had killed Cooley’s son, mirroring Frank’s mission which stemmed from the group’s role in the death of his wife and children.
In the series ‘Daredevil’, Castle’s past military career is utilized to present a similar dark reflection yet again. The narrative presents Ray Schoonover, who once commanded eighteen-year-old Frank Castle, and has since transformed into a New York drug lord by the time of Daredevil. A confrontation between the Punisher and Schoonover ensues as Schoonover aims to eliminate any trace of his involvement in Operation Cerberus, an organization responsible for the wrongdoings he was a part of, which also led him to orchestrate the demise of Frank’s family, prompting another showdown.
As a devoted cinephile, I must say that “The Punisher” pushes this concept to its limits. Characters like Billy Russo (Jigsaw) and the villain from season 2, John Pilgrim, provide striking similarities to Frank Castle’s journey, underscoring how easily he could have succumbed to darkness instead of embracing his role as a relentless vigilante. Both Billy and Frank share a military background, and their mindsets, forged in the fires of war, are remarkably alike. However, Russo’s thirst for power over others escalates, driving him towards destruction, while Castle remains focused on vengeance.
In a striking contrast, John Pilgrim, despite leading a vastly distinct life from Castle – with Pilgrim being a reformed Aryan Brotherhood assassin working under Anderson and Eliza Schultz who offered him redemption, echoes Castle’s relentless pursuit in their respective paths. The profound statement by Pilgrim, “I did all those things because there was something inside me that wouldn’t stop until the whole world was blood“, resonates with Castle’s unyielding mission. Interestingly, John’s resolve to repay his debt to the Schultzes and safeguard his ailing wife and young children even prompts Castle to spare him at the end.
Daredevil: Born Again Has Already Set Up A Perfect Way For The MCU To Repeat This Storyline In The Punisher’s Spinoff
Daredevil: Born Again Has Created A Story For The Punisher That Looks Like It’ll Mirror Many Of His Previous Ones
In the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe Punisher spinoff, Daredevil: Born Again, it appears that Frank Castle’s struggle will center around him fighting a taskforce who misuse his symbol. This conflict arises due to Castle’s intense anger and dismay towards these individuals for believing they shared his values and ideals. The ending of season 1 indicates clearly that this group remains high on his list of targets to take down.
Intriguingly, a spinoff of The Punisher where Castle confronts a group mirroring Frank’s motivations and purpose seems captivating because it presents a fresh twist on a familiar narrative. In the original series, Billy Russo forms a criminal syndicate from disenchanted veterans, exploiting their hardships to rally them together. This new group, viewing Castle as a “traitor”, contends that he should not only comprehend them but potentially even sympathize with their actions given his past association with Russo as a Marine and later a member of Operation Cerberus.
It is suggested that the character Cole North, from the series “Daredevil: Born Again,” might take on the role of the main antagonist in an upcoming Punisher spinoff. This setup could offer a captivating exploration, as North is shown to be responsible for the death of White Tiger in the MCU show, making him the complete opposite of The Punisher despite both being willing to use lethal force. If this turns out to be true, it would mean that Castle encounters a group who distort his objectives, and he’d also have a direct counterpart to contrast with in this way.
The Punisher’s Upcoming MCU Spinoff Could Be The Best “Dark Mirror” Storyline For The Character Yet
The Punisher Spinoff Is In A Great Position Story-Wise
Primarily, the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s newfound readiness to explore darker, R-rated territories presents a significant opportunity for the Punisher spinoff. This is because it allows for an in-depth examination of the vigilante’s identity and his adversaries, who despite sharing similarities, are distinct. Such exploration often necessitates a fair amount of violence and gore. Moreover, this shift suggests that the spinoff might offer a raw, unfiltered portrayal of both Castle and his enemies, which earlier decisions like limiting Jigsaw’s facial injuries in ‘The Punisher’ may not have permitted in previous productions.
From my perspective, the gradual evolution of characters like Daredevil, The Punisher, and Daredevil: Born Again has led us to a resilient version of Frank Castle who, despite numerous challenges, continues to persevere and live on. This trajectory hints at a potential spinoff series that could delve into Castle facing those who reflect his own darkness in unprecedented ways, given his extensively experienced vigilante persona. Though we’re yet to witness the project’s launch, these developments certainly promise an exciting direction for the storyline ahead.
