How Emilia Pérez Is Being Removed from the ‘Emilia Pérez’ Oscar Campaign

This week, the Oscar-nominated actress, Karla Sofía Gascón (Emilia Pérez), was anticipated to jet into Los Angeles from her residence in Spain, ready for a packed schedule of awards promotions.

On Thursday, February 6th, she was scheduled to dine with her director-writer Jacques Audiard, alongside actresses Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldaña, at the AFI Awards luncheon held at the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills. This star-studded event brings together representatives from each of the AFI’s top 10 films and TV shows of the previous year, fostering much social interaction.

Last Thursday, she was expected to join her director-writer Jacques Audiard, as well as actresses Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldaña, at a glamorous gathering known as the AFI Awards luncheon, held at the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills. At this event, representatives from each of the AFI’s top 10 films and TV shows of the past year gather, leading to plenty of networking opportunities.

Both versions convey the original meaning while maintaining a natural, easy-to-read style.

That Friday, Feb 7th evening, she along with her colleagues would have gathered at the Critics Choice Awards, seated around a table centrally located in Santa Monica’s Barker Hangar – a large venue known to be brimming not just with fellow nominees, but also numerous journalists eager for selfies and quotes.

On Feb 7th, she and her colleagues would have attended the Critics Choice Awards in Santa Monica’s Barker Hangar, sitting at a table right in the middle of this vast space. Not only fellow nominees but also many journalists hunting for selfies and quotes would fill this venue alongside them.

On February 8th, Saturday, Emilia Pérez found herself in a tough spot. The Directors Guild Awards and the Producers Guild Awards were scheduled on the same day, with Emilia nominated for top honors in both events. Emilia had been invited to present at the Producers Guild Awards taking place at Century City’s Fairmont Century Plaza hotel.

On Saturday, February 8th, Emilia Pérez faced a difficult decision as both the Directors Guild Awards and the Producers Guild Awards were scheduled for the same day. With nominations for top awards in both events, she was invited to present at the Producers Guild Awards being held at Century City’s Fairmont Century Plaza hotel.

On February 9th, Sunday was supposed to take a drive up to Santa Barbara for an honorary event at the Arlington Theatre. She was among this year’s nine Virtuoso Award recipients, and during the ceremony, each recipient would be interviewed individually followed by a collective interview. Other honorees included her costar Gomez and fellow best actress nominee Fernanda Torres from the movie “I’m Still Here”.

In light of the recent uproar surrounding my social media comments on X, a platform I’ve been actively discussing without prior consultation or coordination with Netflix, who holds the distribution rights for Emilia Pérez in the US, Canada, and UK, it appears that my visit will not be happening. The relationship between Gascón and the streaming service appears to be strained, given that they’ve invested heavily in promoting the film for awards. As recently as January 23rd, the movie was thriving, having received a record-breaking 13 Oscar nominations, one short of the all-time high. However, at a particularly inconvenient time, the situation has taken a turn for the worse due to the recent disclosures about Gascón, leaving the film hanging by a thread.

The two parties are now reportedly talking through Jeremy Barber from UTA (an agent) and Alexandra Crotin and Marisa Martins from The Lede Company (publicists), and it seems Netflix doesn’t plan on offering the typical perks for an Oscar contender, like travel and lodging, to help her attend future award season events.

As a fan, I’ve learned that other participants in the events along with the actress were considering withdrawing their attendance if she didn’t, due to unease about potential discomfort should she remain, should she choose to attend events such as the Santa Barbara Film Festival event.

Gascón could potentially participate in local award ceremonies, like the Goya Awards, Spain’s equivalent of the Oscars, scheduled for this Saturday. Her actions might not raise eyebrows in Europe as they would in the U.S., and with travel being feasible, she can make it to these events. Given her efforts to secure a future in the industry, it wouldn’t be surprising if she chooses to do so.

As a gamer, I’m rooting hard for Emilia Pérez in the Oscar race, especially for her Best Supporting Actress nomination. It seems Netflix is pulling out all the stops to help her competitors avoid the fallout from the Gascón controversy, with Zoe Saldaña, who has been leading the category so far, being a prime example.

As a devoted fan, I’ve noticed that Gascón has been taken out from the email newsletters and ad campaigns promoting the film for awards. It seems they are taking more time to modify outdoor advertising, but some billboards displaying Gascón’s image will soon showcase other cast members as well or focus solely on them.

Despite the fact that voting for both the Critics Choice Awards and the PGA Awards has already closed (January 10 and January 30 respectively), Gascón’s associates could potentially appear before microphones this weekend, receiving top honors. If they do, it will be intriguing to observe whether – and how – they acknowledge her absence in their speeches.
