It’s clear that the unexpected beauty of the Shadowmoss (alternate name for Shadowdrop) in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion left everyone astounded, and players can’t help but speculate about other potential remasters Bethesda may be secretly working on.
It’s been discovered that there are documents indicating a new version of Fallout 3 is being developed, but unlike the remastering work done on Oblivion, refining Fallout 3 will not be a straightforward process.
What Needs to Happen for a Fallout 3 Remaster?
In a chat with VideoGamer, Fallout 3’s designer, Bruce Nesmith, shares his thoughts on updating Fallout 3 for today’s gamers. Responding to the question of desired improvements, Nesmith expressed:
What aspects of Fallout 4 stood out to you? Those changes indicate what they deemed necessary from Fallout 3. In Fallout 4, there were significant improvements made to the gunplay, as it was their first attempt at creating a shooter-style game in the series. I must say, the enhancements they made are truly impressive.
Although fans highly appreciate the world construction in Fallout 3, its creator, Nesmith, openly acknowledges that the shooting mechanics aren’t top-notch.
If they decide to remaster it, he suggests that the developers might need to adjust the gunplay to resemble that found in “Fallout 4”. Simultaneously, he notes that it should be capable of standing strong alongside the most recent “Fallout” game released.
Fallout 3 Remastered Leaks

Although an official announcement for the remastered version of Fallout 3 hasn’t been made yet, it was among the games that were accidentally disclosed during Xbox’s FTC discussions. This leak also suggested that a remaster for Oblivion is under development as well.
If Bethesda decides to create a remastered version, some predict it might be launched within a few years. However, there’s also speculation that they may be planning for a release near the 2nd Season of Prime’s popular adaptation of Fallout, given the significant surge in game interest following the series debut.
Surprisingly enough, I ended up giving Fallout 76 a try, even though it received negative feedback at its debut in 2018. However, this game has managed to flourish and continue to be popular since then.
As we eagerly await the release of the second season of Fallout, scheduled for some time in the next year, there’s ample opportunity for Bethesda or a studio like Virtuous to focus on refining another version of the game that many fans view as their introduction to the series.
Although Fallout 3 Remastered hasn’t been formally confirmed yet, fans can delve into its related series, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, which is currently playable on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
