'How I Met Your Mother's Cobie Smulders Wants to Return in Potential Reboot

As a dedicated fan of sitcoms, particularly “How I Met Your Mother,” hearing about Cobie Smulders’ eagerness to rejoin her co-stars for a potential reboot has me absolutely thrilled! It’s been a while since we last saw Robin Scherbatsky, and I’ve missed her wit and charm. The fact that she made a brief return in the spin-off series only served to stoke the flames of my excitement.

In light of the growing trend of sitcom revivals, Cobie Smulders has expressed her strong desire to work alongside her fellow cast members from “How I Met Your Mother” again. Known for her portrayal of Robin Scherbatsky, a Canadian celebrity (who also played Robin Sparkles) and love interest to both Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) and Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris), Smulders is keen on revisiting the story. The final season of “How I Met Your Mother” was met with much controversy, as it featured Ted finally meeting the long-awaited “Mother,” only for her to pass away within the season, and for Ted to ultimately realize his love for Robin all along (the ending of “How I Met Your Mother” was notoriously poorly received). However, Smulders is hopeful for a chance to revisit this storyline, and has shown eagerness toward a potential reboot.

In conversation with Collider, Smulders expressed her strong desire to rejoin the cast of How I Met Your Mother alongside Radnor, Harris, Hannigan (Lily Aldrin), and Segal (Marshall Erikson). Although she’s already made a short visit back to the sitcom’s realm through a cameo in the spin-off show How I Met Your Father, Smulders shared that this brief reunion has only intensified her longing to reunite with her original co-stars. Smulders stated:

“Always, anytime. I was lucky enough to do one episode of How I Met Your Father. So I feel like…we did it? I love those people, so to be back in a scene with any of them I would do. But there’s nothing yet. That I’m in!”

The prospect of a new season of “How I Met Your Mother” is undeniably thrilling, but coordinating the schedules of the entire original cast could prove challenging. Since their days on HIMYM, Smulders’ career has skyrocketed, with her becoming a key player in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Jason Segal has also enjoyed significant success with his latest sitcom, “Shrinking,” on Apple TV+. While Hannigan, Radnor, and Harris may have more flexibility to join for a potential comeback, this is all contingent upon CBS (or another network) producing and approving a sequel.

Alyson Hannigan Has Already Pitched a ‘HIMYM’ Sequel

Ever since the bittersweet finale of “How I Met Your Mother” left fans yearning for more, Alyson Hannigan might just have us all outdone with her reboot ideas. In September, this beloved star from “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” expressed her enthusiasm about a potential reboot, and she’s even got an intriguing plot lined up. The storyline envisions Ted and the entire gang gathering again to rectify Ted’s tale, with each character taking turns to set things straight. Hannigan suggested that the narrative should begin with them all sitting the kids down once more, ready to correct Ted’s account of events.

“It’s essentially saying, ‘No, no, no, no. That’s not what transpired.’ Then it proceeds with, ‘In fact, we were much older at the time…’ and thus, we can retell the story.

As a devoted fan of “How I Met Your Mother,” I must confess that there’s been no whisper of a reboot or remake from CBS so far. Despite its impressive ratings and acclaim during the first eight seasons, the rocky reception of Season 9 might have squashed any hopes for a comeback. The spin-off, “How I Met Your Father,” even gave it a go and lasted only two seasons between 2022 and 2023, falling short of rejuvenating the franchise.
