As someone who has spent countless hours immersed in the complex and captivating world of Westeros, I can confidently say that the Targaryens have always been my favorite family to watch. Their dragons, their drama, and their incestuous relationships (let’s face it, they’re not exactly normal people) make for an enthralling tale.
As a devoted fan, I must admit that when it comes to George R.R. Martin’s adaptations on screen, it seems the Targaryen family consistently steals the limelight. On “Game of Thrones,” Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) rises to become an unparalleled force, her quest for the Iron Throne thwarted only by Aegon “Jon Snow” Targaryen (Kit Harington)’s intervention. In the prequel series “House of the Dragon,” numerous Targaryens are present, but it’s Rhaenyra (Milly Alcock, then Emma D’Arcy) who truly captivates our attention. Both women exhibit a steely resolve and immense inner strength, which makes one wonder if they could be closely related, even by Targaryen standards – despite “House of the Dragon” being set approximately 200 years before “Game of Thrones.” Now, I can’t help but ponder: are they indeed?
It turns out that tracing the family bond between Rhaenyra and Daenerys isn’t too complicated, and it’s significant to note that Rhaenyra is actually Daenerys’ great-great-great-great-great-grandmother. Although there are many generations separating them, their close relation can be easily understood as they share a strong familial link spanning over two centuries in Targaryen history.
The Targaryen family tree can get interesting
In their respective series, it’s evident that Targaryens don’t always rule out uncles or nephews as potential partners. This peculiarity in family relationships can make the Targaryen genealogy intriguing. However, despite the familial connections between Daenerys and Rhaenyra, their ancestral lineage remains relatively clear.
As a dedicated fan, I can appreciate the intricacies of the Targaryen lineage in “Game of Thrones” and the upcoming prequel, “House of the Dragon.” It’s crucial for the show and its viewers to portray the Targaryens of the “Game of Thrones” era as the esteemed dragon-riding elite without causing confusion or disbelief. Given the occasional inconsistencies in the shows’ lore, the errors in “House of the Dragon” are more noticeable than ever. Both series have a significant Targaryen blunder due to the inconsistent representation of their family sigil. In light of these challenges, establishing Daenerys as a direct descendant of Rhaenyra streamlines the storyline and keeps things straightforward.
