As a gamer with a keen eye for pop culture and a soft spot for tragic tales, I can’t help but feel a pang of sympathy for Jonathan Majors. The once-promising career trajectory of this talented actor has taken a sharp turn, leaving him to seek solace in conventions and fan meetups.
Approximately a year ago, Jonathan Majors’ tenure within the Marvel Cinematic Universe unexpectedly concluded when Marvel Studios dismissed him following allegations of assault and harassment. This incident was among several professional downfalls that the actor faced after being arrested in early 2023 for physically attacking his former girlfriend Grace Jabbari. Previously known as Kang the Conqueror, the actor who received a “one-year sentence for domestic violence counseling” is now seeking alternative methods to generate substantial income due to dwindling acting prospects.
This weekend, on both Saturday and Sunday, some notable figures are scheduled to attend the Famous Monsters Festival taking place in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. If you’re planning to join the event, you might get a chance to secure an autograph or snap a professional picture with him. The autograph costs $140 per piece, while the professional photo opportunity will set you back $160. It’s important to note that he won’t be taking table selfies according to the Festival’s official website.
At the same event, you’ll find stars like George Takei from “Star Trek”, Andy Serkis known for “Lord of the Rings”, and Tyler Mane, famed from “X-Men”. However, as TMZ pointed out, this lineup is quite different from a few years ago when Majors was not only set to portray the primary villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Multiverse Saga, but had also earned acclaim for films such as “The Last Black Man in San Francisco”, “Da 5 Bloods”, and “The Harder They Fall”. After the story broke, a spokesperson for Majors informed the outlet:
As a devoted fan myself, I’m thrilled to reconnect with fellow enthusiasts who share my passion for the Kang saga, and I eagerly anticipate the joy of recognizing familiar, welcoming smiles among the crowd.
It’s plausible to say that 2023 marked a remarkable milestone in the professional journey of Jonathan Majors. He not only shared the screen with Michael B. Jordan as Damian Anderson in “Creed III,” but also took on the role of Kang the Conqueror opposite Scott Lang and his allies in “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.” His performance continued in “Loki” Season 2, where he portrayed Victor Timely, another variant of Kang. The mid-credits scene of “Quantumania” hinted at multiple versions of Kang causing chaos across the Marvel multiverse, a conflict that was expected to reach its climax in the then-upcoming movies titled “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” and “Avengers: Secret Wars.
Previously, everything was set differently. Instead, Marvel has chosen Robert Downey Jr. to portray Doctor Doom, transitioning him into the antagonist for the fifth and sixth Avengers films. Consequently, the title of The Kang Dynasty has been changed to Doomsday. It’s speculated that the absence of the Kangs will be explained in a future Marvel movie, where it’s revealed the Time Variance Authority halted them before they sparked a multiversal conflict. Additionally, there were whispers in late July suggesting that originally Deadpool & Wolverine was intended to depict Paradox gathering entities from various universes to form an army against the Council of Kangs.
Excitedly, even as the buzz surrounding Jonathan Majors’ departure from Marvel continues, I’m eagerly anticipating the public release of his film, “Magazine Dreams,” which had its world premiere at last year’s Sundance Film Festival. At the moment, the only project he has on his slate is Martin Villeneuve’s revenge thriller, “Merciless.” Given this, it’s not surprising to see him at this convention. I can’t help but ponder, though, how many fans will be ready to splurge on his autographs and photos.
