As a seasoned gamer who’s spent countless hours navigating through virtual worlds, I must say that the plot of Lioness is as gripping as any high-stakes mission in my favorite video games. The storyline’s complexity and moral dilemmas are reminiscent of the tough choices one often faces when deciding between saving the world or sacrificing a few virtual lives.
“Caution! This tale unveils some secrets from the third installment of ‘Lioness’ Season Two, titled ‘When the Spider Strikes.’ Proceed with care if you wish to keep your suspense unsullied!”
The plot unfolded during the initial two episodes of Liones, as a U.S. Congresswoman’s husband and child were brutally murdered in their home by members of a Mexican cartel, followed by her abduction and transportation beyond the border at the request of a Chinese government official who was engaging in business with the drug traffickers.
As a gamer immersed in a thrilling virtual mission, I’ve been tasked secretly by the U.S. Secretary of State (Morgan Freeman) to infiltrate Mexico and rescue a Congresswoman from her captors. But my objective doesn’t end there; I’m also to dismantle the cartel and apprehend the Chinese official who orchestrated the kidnapping. In this operation, I’m led by Joe McNamara (Zoe Saldaña), the Lioness program director, and supported by CIA Senior Supervisor Kaitlyn Meade (Nicole Kidman) and CIA Deputy Director Byron Westfield (Michael Kelly). An unexpected twist in our mission is the discovery of a highly decorated U.S. Army helicopter pilot, Capt. Josephina “Josie” Carrillo (Genesis Rodriguez), who happens to be the niece of Mexico’s cartel leader. This new information adds an intriguing layer to my mission, potentially complicating or simplifying the objectives ahead.
The CIA determines it’s crucial for national interests to end Carrillo’s military career and persuade her to join the Lioness program, which requires her to betray her family. To achieve this, they fabricate a narrative stating that Carrillo is responsible for friendly fire deaths of American soldiers in Iraq and is facing court-martial. The pretense is that she is dismissed from the Army and seeks refuge with her family. In an emotionally charged scene in episode two, Joe travels to Iraq to explain his demands to Carrillo by repeatedly asking, “Do you love your country?” Unwilling yet compelled, Carrillo feigns ignorance about her family’s cartel ties (or even denies speaking Spanish) to avoid the Lioness program.
In episode three, the Lioness squad initially breaks into Carrillo’s family home in Dallas while a fabricated news story is broadcasted about an unfortunate incident involving friendly fire. Before joining the team at an undercover facility, Joe visits Carrillo’s family. The Lioness team then begins training Carrillo to become a CIA Black Ops operative. However, during this training, they uncover that Carrillo had concealed information about her family from Joe. Now, the team views her as a potential spy. Carrillo reminds them of the time she bravely protected them during an attack in Iraq. Joe then trusts Carrillo to repay the favor by using a phone to contact her father and initiate the infiltration of her own family.
The character portrayed by Carillo might never find himself in a situation where he has to express patriotism by sacrificing his family, an idea he’d likely prefer not to contemplate in real life. Rodriguez, in conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, described this query as being “laden” with complexity.
Rodriguez passionately expressed his feelings about a significant moment: “I deeply care for my country.” He believes that Josie encounters various themes and incredibly tough decisions this season. These include dealing with sacrifice, loyalty dilemmas within family, and deciding what to let go. For him, it was captivating to portray all these aspects. He immersed himself in his character’s perspective, marveling at her resilience, yet questioning how she managed under such pressure. Consequently, he feels incredibly thankful for the chance to showcase the depth and complexity of a single character.
Michael Kelly mentioned that the challenges a female recruit might face within the Lioness program (modeled after a genuine one) could appear severe. However, he emphasized that the goal remains the goal, and its execution is crucial.
[CIA Deputy Director Westfield] holds high regard for the initiative,” Kelly shared with THR. “He firmly believes, in his viewpoint, that it’s an essential one. He consistently advocates alongside the Secretary of State and the President to maintain its current state. He stands up for the women within the team because he strongly supports the program and considers it crucial. At times, this might be the only viable approach to reach the target. In essence, he is fully committed to the project.
As a dedicated gamer, I found myself stepping into the shoes of Secretary of State Edwin Mullins, portrayed by none other than Morgan Freeman. The role demands me to leverage the Lioness team to tackle global unrest and bring order back to our world.
Freeman clarified that he’s deeply engaged in this situation. Being the Secretary of State, his primary role is to extinguish conflicts (put out fires), but here, it seems like they’re creating them (starting fires). The goal is to eliminate certain issues and seal off any further spread (cauterize). They’re targeting terrorist cells and cartels in different locations, effectively cleaning out and sealing the areas.
As a gamer, I can’t wait for you guys to join me on the upcoming episodes! Trust me when I say that the twists and turns ahead are going to keep you guessing, and I bet you won’t see the ending coming!
What Taylor Sheridan, both creator and occasional actor, does best, according to Rodriguez, is keeping the audience guessing. It’s all about those unexpected twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat. And Rodriguez cautions not to reveal too much, as the surprises in this season are truly unpredictable.
