Every year on May 4th, the influence of Star Wars seems to pull in all sorts of images, memes, and promotional offers with a strong, irresistible force.
May 4th, often referred to by fans as “May the Fourth,” has transformed throughout time into a casual celebration known as Star Wars Day, honoring the legendary space saga and all related content.
What is Star Wars Day?
Star Wars Day was initiated by enthusiasts as a clever wink towards one of the series’ famous sayings, “May the force be with you.” So, let me say it again: May the fourth be with you as well!
Although it’s not an officially recognized holiday, its popularity has grown significantly, with even former President Joe Biden acknowledging it last year when Star Wars actor Mark Hamill visited the White House one day prior. In 2021, the Trump administration celebrated this occasion by sharing a Star Wars-themed meme.
As a die-hard Star Wars enthusiast myself, I can’t help but admire how annually, fans find an ingenious way to express their unwavering enthusiasm and devotion for this galaxy far, far away. And speaking from experience, Steve Sansweet, the visionary behind Rancho Obi-Wan – a remarkable nonprofit museum in California housing the most extensive Star Wars memorabilia collection globally, couldn’t agree more!
How did it begin?
The saying ‘May the 4th be with you’ was adopted by fans following the debut of the first movie in 1977, and it was also utilized in a British political advertisement in 1979, commemorating Margaret Thatcher’s ascension to prime minister on May 4 that year.
For certain enthusiasts, the recognized Star Wars Day falls on May 25, marking the original movie’s premiere. Interestingly, the Los Angeles City Council designated this date as Star Wars Day back in 2007, but the California Legislature later decided to designate May 4 as Star Wars Day in 2019.
How has it spread?
The Fourth of May became an unofficial tradition among enthusiasts, as they exchanged humorous comments online and rewatched the movies to celebrate. Later, businesses also got involved, with various brands such as Nissan and Jameson Whiskey releasing advertisements or posting about it on social media.
Disney, having purchased Lucasfilm back in 2012, saw this day as an opportunity to boost its brand even more by offering merchandise, exclusive screenings, and various events related to the franchise.
Many dedicated Star Wars enthusiasts aren’t entirely thrilled with how popular the once-niche joke “May the Fourth be with you” has grown to be. Chris Taylor, a senior editor at Mashable and writer of the book “How Star Wars Conquered the Universe“, identifies himself as a “May the 4th Scrooge” due to its commercialization.
“I love a good dad joke as much as anyone, but my God you can take it too far,” Taylor said.\
On a Sunday in the western region of Germany, a Protestant community conducted a unique service with a Star Wars theme, as reported by the German news agency dpa. The pastor, Samuel Dörr, along with some members, donned costumes and adorned their church in Bensberg with Star Wars-themed decorations.
How is it being celebrated this year?
This year, the day is being marked with grandeur and simplicity. Disney+ is debuting the fresh Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld series on that particular date, coinciding with the commencement of the second season for another popular series, Andor.
I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be eagerly awaiting the release of a standalone Star Wars movie featuring Ryan Gosling, set for 2027!
Disney commemorates the occasion by introducing a variety of fresh Star Wars merchandise, encompassing everything from lightsaber sets to accessories like jewelry.
Many Major League Baseball teams have been celebrating in recent seasons by organizing unique events featuring Star Wars characters. For instance, the San Francisco Giants offered special tickets for this past Saturday’s game that came with a bobblehead depicting pitcher Logan Webb as “Obi-Webb Kenobi.
You can hardly miss out on May the 4th festivities, as they’re happening everywhere! From bakeries offering Star Wars-themed cookies to music events showcasing iconic film scores, celebrations are abundant.
New Hope, Pennsylvania, a small town named similarly to the subtitle of the initial Star Wars movie, is gearing up for a community-wide celebration. This charming town, home to approximately 2,600 residents and nestled about 30 miles northeast of Philadelphia, intends to fill its streets with characters in costumes and eateries offering themed dishes such as the “YodaRita.
Michael Sklar, president of the Greater New Hope Chamber of Commerce, shared that he often joked by saying “May the 4th” to people, but now, with this level of commitment, it’s clear his Star Wars fandom has taken a significant leap.
At the White House, they shared an artificial intelligence-created picture showing a robust Donald Trump adorned in Jedi robes, brandishing a crimson lightsaber. This photograph, found on platform X, was paired with a witty quote inspired by Star Wars.
On May 4th, greetings to everyone, even those on the extreme left who are passionately working to reinstate Sith Lords, criminals, drug lords, dangerous inmates, and infamous members of MS-13 gangs into our universe. You’re not the rebellion; you’re more like the empire,” reads a post from the White House.
