The movie “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” quickly became one of the top picks for films starring the humorous and action-filled turtle team. Paramount has hinted at more from the Seth Rogen-backed version of the TMNT, giving a green light to a sequel, and also launching a 12-episode series on streaming platforms that focuses on their teenage years.
The animated series titled “Stories from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” chronicles the turtles’ journey as they navigate their dual existence as reptiles and high school students. Familiar faces such as Splinter and April O’Neil are featured, along with new adversaries. Originally airing on Paramount+, the series is now accessible for streaming on Netflix too.
‘Tales of the TMNT’ Develops the Individual Characters
In contrast to many other shows centered around the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Tales of the TMNT offers a distinct and captivating concept. Unlike most series that emphasize the teamwork aspect of the group, Tales of the TMNT differentiates itself by splitting the characters and dedicating each episode to one of the four turtles individually.
A significant aspect that made “Mutant Mayheim” enjoyable was the way the turtles interacted with each other. The voice actors’ laid-back and informal performances highlighted the humorous adolescent aspects of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Moreover, investing time in the series to create well-rounded characters for each turtle is beneficial for storytelling, but it will also make the group more captivating and intriguing in the sequel to “Mutant Mayhem.
Every turtle showcases a distinct character trait, which is further explored in each episode. In the initial installment, Leonardo, the born leader, discovers the challenge of fighting independently without anyone else to command. On another occasion, Raphael, known for his strength and aggression, encounters situations that require him to think, similar to Donatello. Donatello, the brainy turtle, experiences the need to act unpredictably, while in various episodes, Michelangelo learns to take responsibility.
More Mutants, More Enemies
Following the unveiling of the turtles in the city after Mutant Mayhem, a host of new dangers surfaced. In the initial arc of Tales of the TMNT, their first adversary was Josefina Bishop, who harbored a deep-seated animosity towards mutants and constructed robotic mechazoids to annihilate them. The turtles spent the early episodes thwarting these mechazoids, but Bishop’s role didn’t end there. In fact, the Earth Protection Force later enlisted her aid in eliminating mutants.
In Tales of the TMNT, the mutants are significantly involved and some of them, like Leatherhead and Wingnut, reside in the sewers alongside the turtles and have formed their own squad, called the Mutanimals. Later on, the turtles along with the Mutanimals engage in battles against the East River Three, a gang of animals mutated by Superfly’s device. Furthermore, the show presents a mutated pigeon, resulting from Mikey accidentally spilling his blood on a pigeon in one of the episodes.
In addition to its classic storylines about the TMNT, the series delves deeper into the world of criminal underbellies. For instance, a new character named Bad Bernie, who made his debut in Mutant Mayhem, joins forces with the East River Three for a heist involving a massive pearl and manages to survive till the end of the season. The turtles also encounter the Purple Dragons, a gang they’ve been battling since the early days of the TMNT comics, which might pave the way for the introduction of other street gangs like the Foot Clan in the sequel to Mutant Mayhem, with Shredder, an iconic TMNT villain, leading the clan.
‘Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ Saves Best Characters for a Sequel
Although the animated series Tales of the TMNT features a variety of characters not present in the Mutant Mayhem film, fan favorites from previous Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles versions are conspicuously absent from the show. These characters are integral to the overall TMNT narrative, so their omission seems unusual. However, it’s possible that they have been held back for the upcoming movie, where they might attract a wider audience.
Casey Wilson, a character who’s often seen with sports gear turned into weapons and is friends with the Turtles, has been a regular in TMNT films and series. In the show Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, where the turtles operate individually, there was an ideal chance to introduce him. He could have teamed up with one of the turtles in a specific episode. However, fans might need to be patient for the next movie or possibly longer to catch another glimpse of him.
Characters portrayed as antagonists in the movie “Mutant Mayhem” do not appear in the series. The movie concludes with Cynthia Utrom enlisting Shredder, one of the turtles’ primary adversaries, to aid in capturing them. However, Shredder is absent from “Tales of the TMNT,” and it seems his storyline may be reserved for a future installment following “Mutant Mayhem.” Speculation among fans about whether Cynthia Utrom is an android controlled by Krang, one of Shredder’s evil associates, will have to wait for the next film to be revealed.
According to Seth Rogen, who’s behind “Mutant Mayhem” and “Tales of the TMNT”, the follow-up for “Mutant Mayhem” is moving forward. Rogen hinted that there’s a title for it, which he finds fantastic, but he can’t disclose it just yet. Moreover, he stated that the complete animatic version of the movie has already been completed. It appears the sequel to Mutant Mayhem and TMNT tales is set to hit theaters on October 9, 2026.
