How to burn brambles in Avowed (On Strange Shores)

In the initial phase of ‘On Strange Shores’ main quest, you’ll encounter prickly brambles that hinder your progress and refuse to yield when struck with your reliable axe or other melee weapons. Here’s a simple method to set these thorny bushes ablaze in Avowed.

The first challenge you face in ‘On Strange Shores’ is dealing with prickly brambles that won’t budge when you hit them with your axe or other weapons. Here’s a straightforward way to burn the brambles in Avowed.

How to burn the brambles in Avowed’s ‘On Strange Shores’ quest

Look up towards the area where the thorny bushes (brambles) grow, and you’ll spot a small plant with radiant orange fruits named Magran’s Fury. If you strike this, the fruits will fall and ignite the bushes beneath. Unfortunately, they are too high for you to reach with your melee weapon.

Alright, mate! Since we’re not up close and personal in this situation, I suggest grabbing a ranged weapon if you haven’t already. If you don’t have one yet, remember the room with those prison cells where you had a chat with Ilora? Go to the back of that room, where there’s a blocked door leading to the officer’s quarters.

To your left, there are some crates that can help you ascend. Climb on the first two, then rotate and leap onto the platform above the locked officer’s room door. Instead of going through the wall gap and dropping into the office via the hole in the floor (behind the locked door), make a left turn instead.

You’ll be directed to a higher part of the room filled with brambles. Notably, there lies a dead body with a bow nearby on the ground. Grab this bow, arm yourself with it, and take aim at Magran’s Fury, shooting an arrow in its direction.

Following a brief spell of combustion, the brambles shall vanish, leaving you unencumbered to carry on with your journey.

Using the Grimoire to burn the brambles

Further along your journey, you’ll come across some thorny brambles. Right beside them, you’ll find another body holding a wand and a magical book known as a Grimoire. This artifact enables you to cast various elemental spells. To use it, first select the Grimoire from your inventory menu and place it in an extra slot. Once equipped, press and hold LT, then while aiming at the brambles, press A to set them ablaze with a fire spell.

Instead, if you glance upward and slightly left where the bramble patch is, you’ll find some Magran’s Fury that you can take out. To be honest, I didn’t discover the Grimoire’s use until after I’d already spotted the Magran’s Fury. So, in my case, I just employed my bow to eliminate it and burn away the brambles in the same manner as before.

Once you finish ‘On Strange Shores’, you’ll quickly encounter Kai, your initial ally in the game. He possesses a skill named ‘Firestarter’, enabling you to ignite brambles, hindrances, or adversaries with it. To use this skill, simply press LB and then choose the ability from the circular menu that appears. With Kai at your side, you’ll no longer face difficulties with brambles ever again.
