In the game Monster Hunter Wilds, one of the rare accomplishments you’ll face involves tracking down an elusive squid whose location and appearance are unknown to you. This mission is particularly difficult due to both its stealthy nature and the fact that catching it depends on the luck of the weather conditions.

As an ardent enthusiast, I’ve discovered that the colossal squid can be spotted from the get-go. However, reeling one in isn’t always achievable until you ascend to a higher rank and complete various side missions to gain access to top-notch fishing equipment.

Where to find a Goliath Squid in Monster Hunter Wilds

You’ll complete the Monster (Squid) Hunter Achievement by catching the giant squid.

The squid stands out among other water creatures because of its enormous size and the luminous patterns on its body that make it visible to predators. It’s a relatively uncommon species, hard to come by even without considering these characteristics, and it took us quite some time to locate one. It’s more noticeable at night, but you can find it during the day if you pay close attention.

Catching the Giant Squid, known for its large size, means you’ll enter a mini-game if you hook it. Guide your joystick according to the squid’s movement until it stops, then twist your joystick to pull it in. Keep repeating this process until you catch it. If, at any point, the line snaps, the squid will escape, and you’ll need to wait for another one to appear before the rain stops, in order to have another chance of catching one again.

How to catch a Goliath Squid in Monster Hunter Wilds

To successfully net the Giant Squid, it’s essential that you have the Tentacle Lure acquired first. This lure is one of many you can obtain from Kanya stationed at the Forest Outpost in Zone 1. As time goes by, she’ll assign you various fishing tasks to catch fish in diverse regions. By completing each task, you will receive different lures to help you reel in rarer marine life.

You’ll receive The Tentacle Jig reward once you catch a Whopper, and it seems to be the only lure that attracts the Goliath Squid. We hadn’t seen much success with other lures until we tried the Tentacle Jig.

To make your journey smoother, consider establishing a camp at the Forest map’s highest point near Area 17. This will help you avoid constant mountain climbing. Keep a sharp eye out for roaming monsters, as they may unexpectedly scale the terrain. If while attempting to catch a squid, a Rathian sneaks up behind you, it could interrupt your fishing animation, potentially causing you to lose the squid.

You’ll likely require a significant amount of luck and a high-rank level of 15 to initially receive the mission to obtain the Tentacle Jig bait. However, now that you know its location, you won’t have to waste hours searching for it in various biomes as we did in the past.
