What is the Unflinching Duty in Avowed?
In Avowed, the Unwavering Guardian is an exceptional off-hand shield with a special feature. It provides you a chance to dodge melee attacks and increases your total Stamina level. Initially, the Lesser Dodge’s Grace enchantment bonus will grant you a 5% opportunity to bypass melee damage. Although it’s a modest percentage, it serves as an early-game advantage that can enhance your survivability.
Additionally, there’s the enhancement called Lesser Peak Conditioning, which increases your total Stamina by 20 units. This is another beneficial boost that will allow you to perform more actions during battles, such as utilizing this shield.
In the game Avowed, it’s just the primary charm on weapons that can be enhanced. This means you won’t be able to boost the Lesser Glancing Strikes enchantment on the Unflinching Duty shield. However, you can still improve the shield at the Workbench to raise its quality, which in turn will increase its base stats.

How to Get Unflinching Duty in Avowed?
In the game Avowed, you can obtain the one-of-a-kind Unflinching Duty shield by completing the main story quest Message From Afar, making your way to The Strangleroot, battling the Dreamthrall bear, and eventually discovering it on the ground near a fallen soldier.
Step 1- Start the Message From Afar Quest
Upon your initial arrival at the docking station post-tutorial, you’ll embark on a principal mission titled “Message From Afar.” This quest leads you in search of the Ambassador. A soldier at the docks informs you that both he and the local leader (mayor) have gone missing following their journey to The Strangleroot, a dense forest situated north of the ancient Pargrun Wall.
Essentially, The Strangleroot lies quite distant from your initial location, yet it’s reachable by following a relatively direct path. Along this journey, there are numerous opportunities for discovery and exploration. It might be beneficial to engage in some questing or leveling up, perhaps even completing smaller tasks, to earn additional skill points for an ability boost.
Step 2- Reach The Strangleroot
Outside The Strangleroot’s entrance, there’s a quick-travel marker. Use Kai (or any other incantation/bomb) to clear the bushes nearby, then enter. Navigate through the woods heading north; it may take some time. Eventually, you’ll encounter both the ambassador and a deceased claviger.
The ambassador is loudly complaining about the large bear in the vicinity and refuses to talk until it’s been slain. So, stock up on food for health regeneration, prepare yourself, as this appears to be your first significant boss fight. The bear has potent swiping attacks that you should avoid. Whenever you feel overwhelmed, use Kai’s first skill to attract the enemy’s attention away from you.
Following the takedown of the menacing bear, I’ll then spot the ambassador emerging from his hiding place. Near the corpse of a fallen comrade, you’ll find the luminous gold outlines of the Unwavering Duty shield.
How to Use Unflinching Duty in Avowed?
In the game Avowed, optimally employing the exceptional shield Unflinching Duty involves arming a Fighter character with it, preferably while wielding a one-handed weapon. Regardless of your Fighter’s specialization in two-handed combat, this shield remains beneficial. You can store it as part of your secondary weapon set for emergencies, enabling you to swap weapons when needed for added defense if you find yourself in a challenging situation.
As an avid fan, I can share that in Avowed, there’s no strict adherence to class or skill trees when it comes to weapon and equipment selection. This means a Wizard, just like a Rogue, can wield a variety of weapons. Surprisingly, this freedom allows for unique scenarios such as a spellcasting Wizard wielding the Unflinching Duty shield as secondary protection in their second weapon set.
