How To Train Your Dragon Has Screened, And The First Reactions Are Over The Moon: ‘Everything A Live Action Remake Should Be’

Universal Pictures is jumping into the trend of live-action adaptations, much like Disney, with their version of “How to Train Your Dragon“. Originally an animated movie from 2010 based on Cressida Cowell’s 2003 novel, this new adaptation is slated for release in 2025. A sneak peek was shown at CinemaCon in Las Vegas today, and early responses indicate that it could be one of the top live-action remakes of a beloved animated film.

Initially, Jessica Rawden from TopMob commended How to Train Your Dragon for satisfying the essential criteria that justify a remake. Furthermore, she encouraged everyone to catch it on the big screen.

I recently attended the debut of How To Train Your Dragon and it’s everything you’d expect from a live-action reboot: It’s humorous, heartfelt, and filled with nostalgia, all while being grand in scale. For your initial flight alongside Toothless, make sure to catch it on the biggest screen available.

Under the guidance of director Dean DeBlois, who previously brought us 2010’s “How to Train Your Dragon”, this new adaptation shares similarities with classic Disney films like Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin in that it sticks closely to the original story rather than veering off into significant creative departures akin to Mulan. Consequently, the film has garnered praise from Daniel Baptista of The Movie Podcast, who calls “How to Train Your Dragon” visually captivating.

#HowToTrainYourDragon is an enchanting reinterpretation of one of the most cherished animated movies ever made. Filled with emotion, it preserves what made the original so unique and elevates it to extraordinary levels with stunning visuals and an enthralling tale tailored for a fresh audience.

Tess Smith, who is affectionately known as Mama’s Geeky, also felt deeply moved by the production. The powerful acting and the realistic portrayal of the dragons, along with several other aspects, stirred up strong emotions within her.

2025’s How To Train Your Dragon reboot not only preserves the original’s enchantment but elevates it to unforeseen heights. The actors are stellar, and the dragons are irresistibly cute. I found myself shedding tears more times than I can remember. This is simply extraordinary. #HTTYD #HowToTrainYourDragon

In my opinion, I was truly impressed with the way the latest “How to Train Your Dragon” film mirrors the spirit of its animated precursor. However, I must admit that I wasn’t entirely captivated by the fresh elements introduced in this installment.

In nearly every aspect, the live-action version of #HowToTrainYourDragon mirrors the enchantment of its animated counterpart. It includes all the significant scenes, as well as the emotion and thrill. The acting is exceptional across the board. However, I found that the new additions, though tasteful and understated, didn’t quite reach the same level of impact.

Eric Goldman stated that although “How to Train Your Dragon” doesn’t revolutionize live-action remakes per se, he found it incredibly enjoyable to watch.

As a dedicated fan, I must admit that the live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon might not win over those who are skeptical about such adaptations. However, this timeless tale was beautifully retold once more, and it didn’t disappoint. Unlike other recent animation-to-live-action transitions, like The Lion King 2019, it didn’t attempt to reinvent the wheel, but instead, it maintained its heartfelt essence that left me in tears all over again.

Ultimately, Jordan Maison from Cinelinx conceded that he had some initial reservations about the idea of a live-action adaptation for How to Train Your Dragon. However, he ended up appreciating the final outcome.

#TrainingYourDragon: An Outstanding Adventure! The aerial sequences were breathtaking, the action kept me on the edge of my seat, and it beautifully balances heart and humor throughout. Admittedly, I was skeptical about this live-action reboot, but now I’m left in astonishment. #CinemaCon
