Given the abundance of full-length Mystery Inc. mysteries out there, we’ve conveniently categorized them into three types: movies shown in theaters, films produced for television, and direct-to-video productions. Therefore, let’s jump into the Mystery Machine and head towards the spookiest mansion, as we embark on a thrilling detective quest.
The theatrical release Scooby Doo movies in order
In terms of movies featuring “Scooby-Doo” released in theaters, there aren’t many to choose from, which might seem surprising given its long history. However, the first time Scooby and his pals graced the silver screen was in 2002 with the release of the live-action film titled “Scooby-Doo.” This movie, written by a young James Gunn and featuring Matthew Lillard as Shaggy, Sarah Michelle Gellar as Daphne, Freddie Prinze Jr. as Fred, and Linda Cardellini as Velma, demonstrated that the tried-and-true formula from the Saturday morning cartoon could translate effectively to live-action.
Two years after its release, there came “Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed,” a sequel that directly continued the story with the original cast for another thrilling escapade. The Mystery Inc. gang wouldn’t reappear on the big screen again until 2020, in the form of an animated revival called “Scoob!”. This new version transported our favorite characters into a universe reminiscent of Hanna-Barbera, going beyond any typical adaptation of Scooby-Doo.
Here is the sequence in which you should watch the theatrical releases of the “Scooby-Doo” movies, listed for your convenience.
- “Scooby-Doo” (2002)
- “Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed” (2004)
- “Scoob!” (2020)
The Scooby Doo live-action and animated television films in order
Prior to gracing the silver screen, Scooby-Doo made quite an impact on the small one first. Known for their popular animated shorts that brought them fame, Scooby and his friends also had several TV movies of their own. The TV movie trilogy started in 1987 with “Scooby-Doo Faces the Boo Brothers,” a Southern adventure where our beloved characters encounter three ghosts. Later that year, they returned for “Scooby-Doo Goes to Ghoul School,” where Shaggy took up a job as a gym teacher at an all-girls school for monsters. The same year also saw the release of “Scooby-Doo and the Unwilling Werewolf” on television, featuring our cartoon heroes in a monster chase after Shaggy turns into a werewolf. In 1994, the final animated TV movie, “Scooby-Doo! in the Arabian Nights,” was broadcasted.
To ensure you enjoy all the TV-made “Scooby-Doo” animated films in sequence, follow this suggested order:
- “Scooby-Doo Meets the Boo Brothers” (1987)
- “Scooby-Doo and the Ghoul School” (1988)
- “Scooby-Doo! and the Reluctant Werewolf” (1988)
- “Scooby-Doo! in Arabian Nights” (1994)
In addition, following the popularity of the live-action “Scooby-Doos”, Cartoon Network broadcasted a couple of live-action prequel films starring a fresh cast portraying the teenage Mystery Inc. gang members. The first one, titled “Scooby-Doo! The Mystery Begins”, narrated their earlier, unknown story, and premiered in 2009. The sequel, “Scooby-Doo! Curse of the Lake Monster” aired the following year. To enjoy these live-action TV films that link back to the initial live-action movies on the big screen, here’s how you can watch them.
- “Scooby-Doo! The Mystery Begins” (2009)
- “Scooby-Doo! Curse of the Lake Monster” (2010)
Scooby Doo direct-to-video movies in order
The collection of “Scooby-Doo” direct-to-video animated films can sometimes be puzzling, particularly because similar events occur in each movie. This is more noticeable since the series of home video features began with “Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island” in 1998. However, the chronology of these movies doesn’t always align neatly.
From the seventh film onwards, “Scooby-Doo! and the Loch Ness Monster,” the series started being a continuation of the “What’s New, Scooby-Doo?” animated show, but after that series ended, the straight-to-video movies underwent some changes. In more recent “Scooby-Doo” animated films, they tell their own unique storyline, making the characters return to their teenage selves, despite being adults in earlier productions. However, it’s still advisable to watch all of these straight-to-video movies in their original release order, even though most can be watched independently.
