As a devoted fan of “The Boys,” I’ve grown accustomed to the show’s bold and often provocative storytelling. However, even for someone as jaded as me, the events of real life have made Season 4’s finale feel uncomfortable, if not downright disturbing. The assassination attempt on former President Trump has forced Amazon to add a “viewer discretion advised” warning and change the title of the episode from “Assassination Run” to “Season Four Finale.”
Contains spoilers for “The Boys” Season 4, Episode 8, “Season Four Finale”
Amazon Prime Video’s satirical superhero series “The Boys” has raised concerns among some viewers with the heavy use of shock value in Season 4, surpassing the show’s usual limits. Some fans have suggested that the announcement of “The Boys” Season 5 being the last may be an appropriate decision based on audience reactions. Recently, a real-life occurrence has compelled “The Boys” to tackle some contentious themes by renaming the season finale as the “Season Four Finale.” Amazon also included a “viewer discretion advised” warning before the episode and released a statement regarding its content.
“The final episode of ‘The Boys’ on Amazon Prime includes graphic depictions of made-up political violence that might be unsettling for certain viewers, given recent real-life events involving injuries and fatalities during a former U.S. President’s assassination attempt. Please note, this show is purely fictional, filmed in 2023, with any resemblance to real-world situations being unintentional. Amazon, Sony Pictures Television, and ‘The Boys’ producers firmly condemn all forms of real-life violence.”
As a passionate fan of “The Boys,” I can’t help but feel the unfortunate timing of the attempted assassination of Donald Trump at his July 13 campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. This incident occurred just before the season finale of our beloved show, which unfortunately coincided with a pivotal moment in the series.
The assassination attempt has caused other last-minute changes
As a longtime fan of thought-provoking and edgy television shows, I’ve grown accustomed to the occasional boundary-pushing plot twists that keep me engaged and entertained. However, even I was taken aback when I recently watched an episode of “The Boys” where the rogue character Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) assassinated the vice president, and Homelander performed a coup. These events felt alarmingly close to real-life events, such as the assassination attempt on a former president.
In the U.K., Channel 4 TV network chose to take out “The Simpsons” episode titled “Lisa the Iconoclast” from their July 14 broadcast. This episode contains two scenes that bear a striking resemblance to the Trump assassination attempt. The first scene involves Harry Shearer’s character, Jebediah Springfield, attempting to kill George Washington. Subsequently, Lisa Simpson (Yardley Smith) comes close to being shot onstage by a sniper. Furthermore, BlackRock, an investment firm, withdrew their TV commercial featuring Thomas Matthew Crooks, who was the man involved in Trump’s assassination attempt attempt, from this episode.
Amazon’s “The Boys” stands out among other shows in directly addressing Trump’s political legacy, with showrunner Eric Kripke openly acknowledging the former president as a major inspiration. As Kripke stated to Rolling Stone in 2022, Homelander’s flaws mirror those of Trump, and the series aims to examine how public figures who behave badly continue to gain support from their fans.
