As a gamer with a penchant for both the big and small screens, I can’t help but feel a thrill of anticipation over Hugh Jackman’s latest endeavor, “Billionaire Apocalypse.” With his extensive experience in acting and producing, it’s no surprise that he’s venturing into television once more. The concept, while reminiscent of other wealthy family dramas like Succession or Billions, promises a unique twist: an island full of disgruntled employees and family members overthrowing their billionaire boss.
It’s accurate to point out that in the current Hollywood scene, Hugh Jackman is highly requested and consistently occupied with work. His roles extend beyond acting, as he has also produced several titles, being originally from Australia. Now, it appears that Jackman will take on that role again, as he’s rumored to be collaborating with some talent from The Morning Show for a new series in development for a network. Although specifics are lacking at this time, I’m intrigued by the intriguing concept and hope that this series becomes part of the 2024 television lineup.
Hugh Jackman is shifting his skills to Fox by acting as an Executive Producer for a drama series called “Billionaire Apocalypse,” which currently holds the tentative title. This show, produced in collaboration with Fox Entertainment Studios, is the creative endeavor of Jay Carson, who jointly created “The Morning Show.” Carson will serve both as writer and Executive Producer, along with Kevin Brown. Although some fans might be slightly disheartened that Jackman won’t appear on the show, the plot still piques my curiosity. Here is a concise summary of the storyline Variety has shared:
In response to a worldwide economic breakdown, the wealthiest individual on Earth, along with 200 of his staff and his family, are compelled to seek refuge on his personal island. Once there, they soon discover that the man’s vast fortune has been depleted, making him no longer financially capable and thus losing his authority.
More on Hugh Jackman
On his birthday, Hugh Jackman shared a message, and fans continue to joke sweetly about the same thing.
Of course, a show about an extremely wealthy person or family is definitely not unheard of, at this point. The crews and casts of Succession, Billions, Downton Abbey and more can attest to that. However, the notion of an incredibly rich man being forced to lay low – alongside the family and employees he’s derided – on an island sounds so interesting. The brief tease provided suggests this show is going to give some “inmates now running the asylum” vibes. Money, power and disrespect have historically been recipes for compelling TV storytelling, and I really hope that proves to be the case with this show.
Hugh Jackman’s announcement of his latest small-screen project follows a blockbuster summer for him. At 56, this seasoned actor shared the limelight with other stars in the highest-grossing 2024 summer movie release – Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine. This film earned over $1 billion globally and continues to increase its total. Additionally, it was recently disclosed that Jackman would collaborate with Kate Hudson on the musical movie Song Sung Blue.
Regarding Jay Carson, it seems as though he might be busy with the upcoming Season 4 of The Morning Show. At present, information about the new episodes (which can be streamed with an Apple TV+ subscription) is scarce. However, what intrigues me most at this juncture is how Carson’s future project will stack up against the Emmy-winning drama series. While a streaming platform offers greater creative liberty, it appears unlikely that Carson and his team would shy away from gritty themes in their upcoming show, BA.
It’s still unclear when “Billionaire Apocalypse” will air, considering it appears to be in its early development stages. Fingers crossed it finds a spot on the 2025 TV lineup. I’ll stay tuned for news, and secretly I’m hoping executive producer Hugh Jackman might make an appearance on the show as well.
