Hulu is getting back into business with The Dropout creator Liz Meriwether.
The broadcaster has commissioned a drama series, inspired by the 1987 film “Black Widow,” from Meriwether. Additionally, Emmy Rossum serves as an executive producer and is currently discussing her role as one of the main characters in this production.
The upcoming, as-yet-unnamed series will center around an FBI officer who employs knowledge about a female serial killer’s past in an attempt to locate her. If her acting contract is finalized, Rossum will portray this FBI agent.
1987’s “Black Widow” movie (unconnected to the Marvel superhero portrayed by Scarlett Johansson) featured Debra Winger in the role of an FBI agent and Theresa Russell as a murderess who wed affluent men for their fortunes, subsequently claiming their inheritances.

Previously, Meriwether, the mind behind “New Girl”, was in charge of creating and producing “The Dropout” for Hulu. This series was centered around the true story of Elizabeth Holmes, the founder of Theranos. The drama garnered an Emmy award for its lead actress Amanda Seyfried and was nominated as the best limited or anthology series. Additionally, Meriwether received a writing nomination. Together with Kim Rosenstock, she also co-created “Dying for Sex” for FX, which will be available on Hulu for streaming.
Recently, Rossum took on leading roles in The Crowded Room on Apple TV+ and Angelyne, a series inspired by a Hollywood Reporter article about the L.A. icon, for Peacock. Additionally, she served as executive producer for Three Women, set to air in 2023, on Starz.
The television productions by Disney’s 20th Television and Searchlight Television are behind the creation of this series. Meriwether takes on an executive producer role alongside Rossum and her Composition 8 partner Sara Moskowitz, as well as Ron Bass, who penned the 1987 movie.
Meriwether is represented by William Morris Endeavor (WME) and McKuin Frankel. On the other hand, Rossum is managed by MGMT Entertainment, WME, Wolf Kasteler Public Relations, and Felker Toczek.
