Huma Bhabha Mounts Towering Sculptures at Brooklyn Bridge Park

As a captivated admirer, I can’t help but express my awe at Huma Bhabha’s masterpiece, “Before The End,” which has graced Brooklyn Bridge Park with its imposing bronze sculptures until March 2025, standing tall against the breathtaking Manhattan skyline. This extraordinary exhibition, brought to us by the Public Art Fund, is a testament to Bhabha’s fascination with themes of apocalyptic imagery, science fiction, and horror. The title itself, borrowed from medieval writer Vincent of Beauvais, echoes his ominous visions, resonating deeply with Bhabha’s own thoughts about the world’s current state.

The sculptures – made from molded cork and remnants of bones – function as both cautionary symbols and observers. “I named it Before The End,” Bhabha stated to Artnet, “I didn’t realize what was on the horizon when I created them in 2023.

In May 2025, Bhabha’s busy schedule includes an event titled “Encounters: Giacometti” at London’s Barbican Centre. Here, her sculptures will be exhibited alongside those of the Swiss modernist, Alberto Giacometti. Following this, in June, she will have a solo exhibition at David Zwirner Paris. The impact of Giacometti on Bhabha’s artistic journey is profound, extending from her initial encounters with his work to her unique methods in sculpture. As she put it, “I use my hands. There’s a very direct connection to the material.” Her artwork, like that of Giacometti, delves into themes of war, displacement, and mythology, addressing the burden of history – past, present, and future.
