As a lifelong cinephile who’s been through the ringer with countless films from various genres, I must say that 2024 was quite the year for comedy – or should I say, not-so-traditional comedy. Among the myriad of funny movies across different categories, one film stood out like a beaver in a sea of otters: “Hundreds of Beavers.”

Now, you might think that a black-and-white, silent movie with four actors and a whole lot of animal suits isn’t exactly your cup of tea. But trust me, give this film 10-15 minutes, and I promise you’ll be rolling on the floor with laughter! It’s raw, it’s wacky, and most importantly, it’s comedy in its purest form – stripped of all Hollywood artifice.

The plot is as absurd as a beaver wearing a top hat: an applejack salesman finds himself in the frozen wilderness, battling hundreds of beavers to become North America’s greatest fur trapper. Sounds like a recipe for a good laugh, doesn’t it?

While “Hundreds of Beavers” takes the cake for me, there were several other great comedies that graced our screens in 2024. For instance, Jesse Eisenberg’s “A Real Pain” offers a heartwarming look at Jewish ancestry through the eyes of two cousins, while “Brothers” is as wacky as it gets, featuring an all-star cast letting loose and delivering some of the funniest moments of the year.

2024 saw a plethora of humorous films, yet most didn’t fit the traditional definition of ‘comedies.’ Instead, we had action movies with a humor element (like _The Fall Guy_ and _Bad Boys: Ride or Die_), comedic dramas (_Anora_ and _Dìdi_), horror films with a comical twist (_The Substance_ and _Lisa Frankenstein_), and thrillers with a dose of fun (_Drive-Away Dolls_ and _Emilia Pérez_). However, only a few can be categorized as straightforward comedies. One film, however, harkened back to the essence of comedy, blending silent slapstick with early animation for a laugh-out-loud experience. This film is now available to watch almost everywhere – it’s the eccentric and utterly hilarious _Hundreds of Beavers_.

In the film “Hundreds of Beavers,” Ryland Brickson Cole Tews, who plays the lead role, delivers one of the finest physical performances in recent memory. Given the extreme challenges he faced in director Mike Cheslik’s film, it’s fortunate that Tews was also a co-writer. This indie project, made on a budget of $150,000 over several years, was filmed during the harsh winters of Wisconsin and Michigan in 2019 and 2020. Editing and post-production took another two years to complete. After a successful run at film festivals, it took an additional two years to secure distribution before “Hundreds of Beavers” was finally released to widespread praise in 2024, earning a 97% critics’ rating and an 83% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Consider taking a peek at this movie for around 10-15 minutes. It’s a unique production featuring just four main actors, accompanied by numerous extras dressed in human-sized animal costumes. Despite being a silent, black-and-white film, it manages to be consistently funny and extremely imaginative. This is a raw, unadulterated comedy, free from the trappings of Hollywood. Other Great Comedy Movies of 2024

Among the numerous comedies of 2024, my top choice for the year’s best straight-up comedy is “Hundreds of Beavers.” However, there were many other outstanding comedies in that same year. The character-driven comedy, “A Real Pain,” starring Jesse Eisenberg and the exceptional Kieran Culkin, stands out. This film follows two cousins as they journey to Poland to uncover their grandmother’s history and Jewish roots.

In my humble opinion as a film critic, Brothers might be a bit zany (and admittedly, it stumbles into some rather questionable humor at times), yet it boasts an impressive collection of uproariously funny scenes that have left audiences in splits throughout 2024. This Prime Video crime comedy benefits immensely from its stellar ensemble cast – Josh Brolin, Peter Dinklage, Glenn Close, Brendan Fraser, Taylour Paige, M. Emmet Walsh, Jennifer Landon – each of whom relishes the opportunity to cut loose and revel in the joy of being silly.

On a different note, Babes showcases an outstanding performance from writer Ilana Glazer, offering a more earthbound yet still amusing exploration of female camaraderie.

Kevin Smith’s film, titled “The 4:30 Movie“, bears a striking resemblance to Adam Carter Rehmeier’s movie “Snack Shack“. Both movies are comedic coming-of-age stories that serve as humorous yet poignant autobiographies from talented comedy directors. However, it’s “Hundreds of Beavers” that truly stands out.
