As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for compelling narratives and powerful performances, I find myself deeply empathetic towards Hunter Schafer, the talented actress who portrays Jules in Euphoria. Her journey, much like the complex characters she plays, is filled with layers of depth that resonate beyond the screen.
As a gamer, I remember the nerve-wracking moment when I had to confess to my pastor parents about the personal struggles portrayed in ‘Euphoria’, including self-harm and explicit scenes. To put it mildly, it was an uncomfortable conversation.
Actress from “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” recently shared on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast that her parents’ church leans towards a more conservative form of Christianity, yet she expressed discomfort regarding the graphic and unsettling content in the scenes.
“There’s this whole pastor’s daughter trope. And it gets kind of tough,” Schafer admitted.
Among the more challenging moments to portray were two specific scenes: one involving Jules, a 17-year-old character, engaging in graphic anal sex with Cal, who is around 40 years old, and another where she self-harms at a party while Nate, also a character, looks on.
“When it came time for me to share with my parents that I was engaging in anal sex with a 45-year-old and self-harming by cutting myself in the arm during the first episode, my initial reaction was, ‘Wow, they’ll need to inform their congregation about their child appearing on TV.’ Then, knowing that their congregation consists of kind, older Christian folks from the south, and they might watch this show and see me in a compromising situation, I feel guilty because it’s something they still have to confront.”
It’s anticipated that Barbie Schafer will rejoin the cast for season three of Euphoria, filming scheduled for January 2025. Despite this, the critically acclaimed HBO series has encountered numerous challenges and setbacks since its second season debut in 2022, causing some fans to wonder if a third installment was still possible.
“The Cuckoo star expressed uncertainty about the upcoming events, stating that even the cast members themselves are not fully informed. He hinted at a significant amount of changes taking place behind the scenes.”
Nevertheless, Schafer acknowledged that no matter which route they take, it will undoubtedly be challenging returning to the set after Angus Cloud’s passing in 2023. He portrayed the character of drug dealer Fez for two seasons.
“She suggested that under the right circumstances, we could create a stunning Season 3 – assuming there will be one. That unexpected event left everyone bewildered, as she put it, ‘it really took us all by surprise.'”
