Hwang Dong-hyuk Explains Why ‘Squid Game’ Is Ending With Season 3

As a devoted fan of Hwang Dong-hyuk‘s masterpiece, Squid Game, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and melancholy upon hearing the news that season three will be the final chapter. Having lived through the highs and lows of this gripping series, I find myself reminiscing about Gi-hun’s journey, from desperate debtor to reluctant hero, with a sense of deep connection.

The creator of Squid Game, Hwang Dong-hyuk, has shared his rationale for the Netflix series reaching its conclusion in season three.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he expressed that it felt “instinctive” to him that there are no more tales left to spin about both the lethal game and character Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae). “As I pondered the concept for the ending of season three,” he said, “I think it just naturally occurred to me that this was the finale.” He felt that with this storyline, he had conveyed everything he wanted to express about Squid Game and also in terms of Gi-hun’s character development. He believed they didn’t require any additional stories beyond this point. Furthermore, he shared that he is almost finished with the editing process for season three, with the final season set to air in 2025.

As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but share my excitement over Hwang’s hints about the second season of Squid Game. He confessed that the weight of writing the sequel was considerable since he hadn’t planned beyond the first season. Yet, he had a concept for a potential second season – Gi-hun, our protagonist, would re-enter the games with the intention of ending them once and for all. This intriguing journey will unfold across seasons two and three, taking us along on Gi-hun’s physical and emotional quest.

After a discussion following an initial viewing of the premiere episode of the upcoming season, the creator hinted that the ordeals endured by Gi-hun have profoundly transformed him: “Gi-hun has been through so much and witnessed too many deaths; he won’t easily revert to his old self, regardless of how hard he may strive.” Lee reinforced this sentiment, stating that the character portrayed in season one is markedly distinct from his state in season two.

Squid Game season two premieres December 26 on Netflix.
