Hysteria! Review | Peacock's Satanic Horror Thriller Is Devilish Fun

As a seasoned horror enthusiast who has witnessed countless spine-tingling tales, I must admit that “Hysteria!” has left an indelible mark on my psyche. Having grown up in the ’80s myself, the nostalgic blend of eerie mystery and pulsating rock music instantly transported me back to those formative years. The series masterfully weaves together two very different generations, each grappling with their unique brand of fear and uncertainty, much like the adults did during the Cold War era.

In Peacock’s latest horror thriller titled “Hysteria!“, the peaceful town of Happy Hollow is anything but blissful. Despite the ironic title, the real interest lies in how this 1980s-set series plans to explore and modernize its central topic – the Satanic Panic that was prevalent during that era. The hysteria about Satanic cults and widespread abuse might have gripped the public’s imagination around four decades ago, but with this new series, it promises to capture attention once more as it follows the struggles of a small town grappling with the unfathomable.

In more contemporary cinema, movies such as “Immaculate”, “The First Omen”, and “Late Night with the Devil” have continued to uphold the tradition of devilish films, keeping audiences on edge with their spine-tingling horror. The series “Hysteria!” follows suit, delivering numerous shivers, much like its eerie contemporary counterpart, “Teacup”. The suspense remains palpable throughout its eight episodes, and the mystery keeps viewers guessing. However, it’s intriguing to ponder how this show would fare beyond Halloween season, a time when the demand for horror isn’t as great.

Still, there’s a good case to be made for this series’ presence in the Peacock universe. Between its chilly vibe, sharp ensemble cast — Julie Bowen (Modern Family) and Anna Camp (Pitch Perfect) are immediate standouts — and blend of intergenerational angst, Peacock doesn’t need to pray for another hit. It has one here with Hysteria!

The Devil Is in the Details

In this production, Matthew Scott Kane, known for his work on ‘Stitchers’, and David A. Goodman, recognized for his work on ‘The Orville’, take charge. They masterfully balance suspense, surprises, and shocking moments. Besides Bowen and Camp, the series boasts a strong and dense cast, which adds depth to the storyline. Managing such an impressive array of talent is no easy feat. It’s refreshing to witness how skillfully Kane leverages this cast to hint at potential threats or victims, and it’s a delight to see Bruce Campbell portraying the town sheriff.

Let’s break down the storyline: When popular high school quarterback Ryan Hudson (played by Brandon Butler) mysteriously disappears, the town becomes anxious. This unease is only intensified when an eerie threat escalates the situation, leading to a widespread Satanic panic. The plot thickens as we focus on a trio of misfits – Dylan (Emjay Anthony), Jordy (Chiara Aurelia), and Spud (Kezii Curtis) – who decide to turn their outsider status into something more by forming a death metal band. They hope this move will finally bring them recognition. However, they receive attention in ways they didn’t expect. As a series of murders, abductions, and strange occurrences take place, suspicion falls back on the group.

Julie Bowen and Anna Camp Rock It

The series “Hysteria” is overflowing with unexpected events and turns, but it occasionally leans too heavily on the horror formula: Strange Element A combined with Frightening Element B usually results in a startling outcome or cliffhanger C. This can sometimes limit its creative potential. Nevertheless, despite being foreseeable, the end product is engaging, and Matthew Scott Kane effectively delivers a chilling thriller that maintains its momentum. Indeed, it’s downright terrifying. Two women play crucial roles in the story, though the entire ensemble performs admirably.

Julie Bowen and Anna Camp, if you would come over here please. In this production, Bowen takes on the role of Linda Campbell, Dylan’s mother, who is going through an unusual string of events that we wouldn’t normally associate with her. You might recognize Bowen from the popular sitcom Modern Family. However, in this film, she will make you jump out of your seat with her terrifying screams that are sure to send shivers down your spine. It’s a thrilling ride and a secret pleasure to witness this character go through more chills than you’d expect.

From a contrasting perspective, Camp portrays another mother, the conservative Tracey Whitehead, who’s stoking fear and actively gathering supporters for her cause, reminiscent of today’s Trump phenomenon or any group that disregards rationality in favor of a preferred, potentially misguided goal. In this regard, she bears a striking resemblance to Marcia Gay Harden’s chilling portrayal of Mrs. Carmody in The Mist. The creators skillfully develop these two distinct characters as they navigate similar enigmatic occurrences, surrounding both Tracey and Linda with intrigue.

Two Very Different Generations Share the Same Big Problem

In another context, if you’re hoping to see Bruce Campbell take down some supernatural entity, give me a second. Known for his fame in the The Evil Dead series (though many believe his best role was in Bubba Ho-Tep), this actor has a more realistic vibe in the story. However, whenever Campbell appears on screen, he delivers an outstanding performance.

Key characters to focus on include the main teen trio, who are given significant roles and a substantial mystery to unravel. Imagine a blend of the suspense from “Stranger Things” and the investigative elements of “Harry Potter.” These youngsters find themselves under suspicion as the town believes they’re connected to the unusual events happening around them. As more high school students become involved, the movie takes on a lively, eccentric high-school caper feel at times. The character interactions, particularly among the teens, are well-executed and intricately linked, much like the lines in a pentagram, which are abundant throughout the storyline.

In terms of its themes, the series “Hysteria!” underscores that fear is a constant across generations. The characters are now grown adults from the Atomic Age who supported Ronald Reagan, only to find themselves unexpectedly clinging to safety. Additionally, the show delves into the notion that parenting can be just as terrifying as growing up. The series boasts impressive special effects and an 80s-inspired soundtrack filled with powerful rock music, creating a trippy yet enjoyable viewing experience. Underlying it all are well-developed characters. So, get ready for a thrilling ride! “Hysteria!” will be streaming on Peacock starting October 18. Here’s the link to watch it: [Peacock Link]
