As a die-hard metalhead who’s been to more concerts than I can count, I must say that the Dethkrunch scenes in Hysteria! have got to be one of the most impressive and authentic portrayals of a band I’ve ever seen on screen. The dedication of Emjay Anthony, Chiara Aurelia, and Kezii Curtis to master their instruments before shooting speaks volumes about their commitment to their craft.
As a passionate fan, I’m here to share some exciting insights about Dethkrunch, the fictional heavy metal band from Peacock’s Hysteria! While they may not exist in reality, their musical skills are undeniably genuine. In an interview with USA Insider, the talented cast members Emjay Anthony (Dylan Campbell), Chiara Aurelia (Jordy), and Spud (Kezii Curtis) disclosed that they honed their instrumental abilities prior to filming the series inspired by the Satanic Panic era.
Hysteria! actors really learned to play their instruments for Dethkrunch scenes
Anthony describes an experience we shared called ‘band camp.’ It took place in Atlanta, where we arrived three weeks ahead of schedule. We spent time at a fantastic music studio working with skilled professionals who taught us various instruments. I specialized in guitar, Chiara focused on bass, and Kezii excelled at the drums,” he said.
Curtis shared that he had some drumming background but learned the correct etiquette for drums. He found it an amazing and thrilling period for everyone involved. However, neither Emjay nor Chiara were familiar with their respective instruments initially, but now, particularly Emjay, sends me videos of him playing entire songs.
According to Jessica Treska, who played Judith (a character fascinated by cults), the initial investment made during pre-production proved to be worthwhile when filming began. She described the musical performances as incredibly enjoyable and admitted that she wasn’t a big fan of metal music prior to working on the show. However, her appreciation for it grew significantly while filming, particularly because of the unique environment. Although it may not be fully apparent to viewers watching the show, Jessica found being in the room with the band and experiencing their music firsthand to be electrifying and a truly memorable experience. She had never been to a concert like that before.
