‘I Am Obsessed With Learning’: Jeopardy’s New ‘Villain’ Matt Amodio Shares Takeaway From JIT Victory, And It’s Exactly What I Wanted To Hear

In 2025, when Jeopardy! Masters comes back on TV, there will be two contestants who could be considered “villains” among the six participants. James Holzhauer, who has proudly played the villain role in both Jeopardy! and The Chase, may find himself with some competition as Matt Amodio, another prominent winner on Jeopardy!, will be joining him in the Masters tournament following his JIT victory. What’s more interesting is that Amodio shares the same mindset as Holzhauer when it comes to their approach to the game.

In an impressive display during the Jeopardy! Invitational Tournament, Matt Amodio triumphed in the finals by defeating contestants Roger Craig and Juveria Zaheer twice consecutively. This might be the most unpopular move since he adopted a formidable character, but according to the Inside Jeopardy! podcast, he aims to further expand his knowledge to even more intimidating levels.

Although my full-time job requires most of my attention, it doesn’t mean it will slip too far behind, as I find great joy in it. My passion for acquiring new knowledge and skills makes every opportunity to learn an enjoyable experience.

As a film enthusiast, it’s downright chilling for other Jeopardy! Masters competitors to witness Matt Amodio’s relentless thirst for knowledge. Yet, hearing about his insatiable curiosity is exactly the kind of thing that gets my heart racing. Amodio, with his impressive track record, could easily coast on what he already knows. But with a demanding day job, he’s found a way to consistently outperform expectations.

Nevertheless, Matt Amodio isn’t taking his previous success for granted as he gears up for a rematch against the top 3 from last year’s Masters, namely Victoria Groce, James Holzhauer, and Yogesh Raut, along with Neilesh Vinjamuri, the Tournament of Champions winner. Additionally, a yet-to-be-named producer pick is also on the roster. Interestingly, Matt Amodio seems to be studying even more intensely, as he himself stated:

In simpler terms, my approach to Jeopardy has stayed largely consistent, but now that I’m in tournament mode, I anticipate facing more complex trivia questions. Since I’m on this stage, I look for topics that might have been considered too obscure for regular Jeopardy games or even the Masters and JIT tournaments; these are usually found in the bottom row of categories.

Apart from constantly satisfying his curiosity for knowledge, Matt Amodio anticipates becoming a frequent participant in the postseason edition of Jeopardy!, where the questions become more challenging. Consequently, he’s immersing himself deeply into various subjects and probably watching some Pop Culture Jeopardy! using his Amazon Prime Video subscription to sharpen those areas as well.

Matt Amodio has earned a spot among the top performers in the annals of one of television’s most iconic game shows, currently holding the fourth highest earnings record at approximately $1.8 million from the Jeopardy! Invitational Tournament. He also ranks third for the longest winning streak, having won 38 games consecutively. This places him behind only Ken Jennings (who believes his 74-game streak can be surpassed) and Amy Schneider (40).

He doesn’t need to demonstrate anything to the fans of Jeopardy!, but still, he keeps appearing – not merely to trade quips with another contestant labeled as a nemesis on game shows, but rather to pose a genuine challenge to James Holzhauer and current champion Victoria Groce.

We’re eagerly awaiting the release of the “Jeopardy! Masters” series, however, until then, don’t forget to look up when the usual episodes will be on TV in your area through syndication.
