As A Lifelong Fan With An Obsession For Both Spy Thrillers And Paddington Bear, Black Doves Took Me On A Rollercoaster Ride Of Emotions
Currently, as I compose this tale, the sounds of “Black Doves” from Netflix fill my surroundings, and I’m captivated by Ben Whishaw’s melodious tones. Despite not focusing on his spoken words, his voice instantly conjures up images of the beloved bear character he voices, Paddington. Yet, when I pause to truly listen to Sam’s lines, it becomes apparent that this character is far from the most heartwarming one out there. He portrays an assassin who can be emotionally complex and at times, cold-hearted. In a nutshell, this change in character is quite startling.
Initially watching the Netflix series for the first time left me somewhat puzzled about Ben Whishaw’s character. Yet, I found myself captivated by it because it challenged my preconceptions about him as an actor and the spy genre overall.
As A Paddington Fan, Seeing Ben Whishaw As An Assassin Confused Me And Threw Me Off Guard
Initially, I found myself perplexed due to my strong connection between Ben Whishaw and the beloved character of Paddington Bear from the movie “Paddington 2”. This is because I am among many in the camp who share the sentiment expressed in reviews, considering it a flawless film. Thus, whenever I encounter Mr. Whishaw, my mind instinctively recalls this innocent bear.
In the gripping world of “Black Doves”, it’s safe to say that his character is far from wholesome, and every time he appeared on my screen, I found myself mentally distancing him from the beloved Paddington Bear.
The situation caused quite a bit of misunderstanding during the entire performance. To set the record straight, this isn’t at all Ben Whishaw’s fault or issue – it’s entirely my responsibility. He delivers an exceptional performance in this show! Nevertheless, whenever he appeared on screen with a gun, flirting with someone, or dealing with a brutal situation, I found myself needing to remind myself that he isn’t Paddington, but merely sounds like him.
The unexpected transformation of Ben Whishaw from a gentle figure to an assassin in the show was actually beneficial. This shift in perception wasn’t unpleasant; it was thrilling because it challenged my initial impressions about both the actor and the spy genre. His portrayal as this cool, composed, and controlled assassin effectively disrupted my preconceived notions about him and the genre.
However, It’s That Subversion Of Expectations Of Both Ben Whishaw And The Spy Genere That Makes Me Love Black Doves
In this 2024 Netflix release, there are two different subversions of expectations going on.
In a unique twist, the character Sam presents Ben Whishaw with an opportunity to portray someone drastically different from his previous roles. If you’re accustomed to seeing him as the lovable and gentle Paddington or the intellectually brilliant Q in James Bond, you might think of him more in terms of quieter, softer characters. However, Black Doves offers a complete change of pace.
As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but acknowledge that Sam exudes an air of readiness to eliminate anyone who crosses his path, and he does so with a sassy flair that’s reminiscent of the chilling personas we’ve grown accustomed to seeing in assassins and spies. Yet, Whishaw brings an iconic charm to his lines, making them seem effortless, and his action sequences are nothing short of epic.
Yet, there’s an unmistakable softness about Ben Whishaw’s portrayal of Sam that sets him apart from the typical cold-blooded assassin, giving him a depth of emotion and vulnerability that is particularly poignant.
In the series, Sam’s human qualities significantly shape its narrative, as he continually struggles with his longing for affection throughout the season. The actor who portrayed Bond in Skyfall skillfully infuses his character with charm and vulnerability, which results in an enchanting and endearing persona that captivates the audience within this tale.
One reason for the high praise received by “Black Doves” is its unique blend of elements, which is one of the reasons I’m so fond of it. If you haven’t seen it yet, now might be the perfect moment to take advantage of your Netflix subscription and watch Ben Whishaw bring his exceptional acting skills to life as an assassin in this entertaining, action-packed, witty, imaginative, and sometimes emotionally resonant series.
