I Can’t Stop Playing Blue Prince, and It’s Starting to Feel Personal

I’ve found myself deeply engrossed in Dogubomb’s roguelike puzzle game for several days now; it’s hard to tear myself away. The game shares a captivating, compulsive quality reminiscent of games like Lorelei and Laser Eyes, and Outer Wilds. It’s the kind of game where understanding its intricacies and context can give you an edge in mastering it.

As a devoted enthusiast, I’d say playing Blue Prince is like navigating through a labyrinth of strategy – it consistently challenges my cognitive abilities with each play, and the randomness of its gameplay mechanics adds an extra layer of intrigue. However, this unpredictability can be maddening at times, as if the game itself is conspiring against me, often leading to frustration among players who find their runs thwarted by the ever-escalating caprices of chance.

For myself, it’s the random number generator (RNG) that provides the thrill I can’t resist. Ever since I started, I’ve been hooked and continue to play without pause.

The Search for Room 46

In contrast to Hades II with its focus on fighting Titans and Enter the Gungeon’s endgame revolving around eliminating the past, Blue Prince offers an entirely distinct experience. Unlike combat-heavy or bullet-hell games, it merges elements of walking simulators and puzzles, much like The Talos Principle or The Witness do. However, what has kept me captivated over the last few days is a unique and peculiar aspect that sets it apart.

Similar to Mark Z. Danielewski’s House of Leaves in a less complex manner, The Blue Prince’s Manor is not always as it appears. Its rooms are constantly changing. The game plunges players into this vast, secret-filled mansion. As the heir to the estate, your objective is to locate the mysterious Room 46 to claim your inheritance. To achieve this, you must traverse a nightmarish labyrinth of puzzles and unpredictability.

As a gamer in the captivating realm of Blue Prince, I don’t technically meet my demise, but the game employs an intriguing mechanic: resources for exploration are scarce and deplete with each room I venture into. Once I exhaust these resources or find myself cornered without any left, the day concludes, effectively wiping away all progress. Essentially, it’s a creative way of saying, “I met my match today.

The Nightmare That Follows

The reason I can’t stop playing this game is because whenever I encounter an obstacle or a dead end, I feel compelled to keep going to the next day, hoping for some valuable discovery – it could be a mysterious clue in a document, or uncovering another layer of secrets within the Estate.

As an ardent player, I’ve come to realize there’s no cap on the number of attempts I can make in Blue Prince, which is undeniably beneficial. However, my current adversary within this game seems to be nothing but pure chance—and it’s questionable whether I, with my current build, am well-suited for such a challenge.

At the moment, I’m on my 44th attempt – or put another way, I’m deep into my 44th adventure in a roguelike setting. So far, I’ve barely unraveled the main enigma of locating Room 46, but I’m getting closer to the solution. I’ve discovered hidden keys, followed up on promising clues, and delved headfirst into the game’s rich tapestry of history. However, that blasted Room 46 keeps slipping through my fingers.

Since Blue Prince launched on April 10th, I’ve easily invested close to 20 hours in it – that’s a fortnight of navigating every haunted hallway within the wretched Manor, seeking clues and uncovering secrets.

And I won’t stop until I find them.
