'I Couldn't Believe I Was One Foot Away In That Van Scene When He Was Tearing Deadpool A New A--Hole.' Ryan Reynolds Is An A-Lister Himself But Still Can’t Get Over Filming With Hugh Jackman As Wolverine

As a lifelong Marvel fan and someone who’s grown up watching these characters evolve on screen, experiencing the magical chemistry between Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and Ryan Reynolds‘ Deadpool was nothing short of a dream come true! The camaraderie between them, their shared history, and the sheer fun they seemed to be having during filming were palpable.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe consistently delivers fresh material, either in movie theaters or through a Disney+ subscription for streaming. The most recent blockbuster hitting the big screen was “Deadpool & Wolverine“, shattering box office records and showcasing the playful rivalry between Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds off-screen as well. Interestingly, even though Reynolds is a top-tier star in his own right, he remains thrilled about working alongside Jackman, portraying Wolverine.

The Deadpool & Wolverine cast list is obviously led by its two title characters, with besties Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds sharing a ton of screentime. That includes the emotional scene where Wolverine shares his backstory, and their following battle in a minivan. During a conversation with EW, Reynolds spoke about the duality of being both a fan and friend of Jackman’s. In his words:

I’m closely observing one of my dearest friends on the planet, and I have an exceptional viewpoint. I’m not just a spectator; I’m a devoted admirer. In fact, you could say I’m something like a die-hard fan. I share all those same emotions. We go way back, 16 or 17 years to be exact, and when I saw him performing that incredible scene where he was mercilessly dismantling Deadpool, it was as if I were standing just a foot away in that van – I couldn’t believe it!

It appears that playing Deadpool alongside Wolverine in the MCU seemed to be a particularly exciting opportunity for Reynolds. Not only did this role allow him to reprise his iconic character, but he also got to collaborate with friends such as Shawn Levy and Hugh Jackman. The prospect of observing Jackman’s performance during scenes like the minivan sequence was an added bonus that clearly delighted Reynolds.

Although Reynolds may have been thrilled during filming scenes alongside Jackman’s Wolverine, this enthusiasm did not seem to impact his portrayal in Deadpool 3. Considering the film’s remarkable success both critically and commercially, it is anticipated that this duo will play a significant role in future Marvel productions.

During the very same interview, Reynolds shared his joy about donning the Deadpool costume alongside Jackman in those particular scenes. To quote him directly:

Thank God I didn’t have to talk and Thank God I’m wearing a mask because I really got to watch. I really got to watch you and feel that.

Ryan Reynolds indicated his availability, all while donning Deadpool’s mask, suggesting that the costume played a significant role in practical ways during the filming of Deadpool & Wolverine. This included concealing his face during movement and allowing him to observe Hugh Jackman’s performance.

Enthusiasts, long-time admirers of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films, were overjoyed when Deadpool and Wolverine’s characters from their respective titles made their entry into the MCU. It’s exciting to speculate about how they could be involved in upcoming projects like Avengers: Doomsday. Here’s hoping we receive updates on future plans sooner rather than later.

The upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film set for release in theaters is titled “Captain America: A New World Dawns” on Valentine’s Day, February 14th. In the meantime, keep an eye on the 2025 movie premiere dates.
