As a lifelong fan of Sonic the Hedgehog and Jim Carrey, witnessing the hilarious dance sequence in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was nothing short of a dream come true. The scene was a brilliant blend of nostalgia and innovative humor that had me rolling with laughter. It’s no secret that Carrey is known for his hands-on approach to acting, so it’s only fitting that he would up the ante with this dance sequence.
The following article contains spoilers for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, so beware if you haven’t caught the fun family flick yet!
If you’ve been following the 2024 film releases, you might be aware of the highly anticipated movie “Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” which has garnered positive feedback from TopMob and outran other films at the holiday box office this weekend. This movie continues the tale of the swift hedgehog hero and his companions, but there’s a hilarious dance scene that caught my attention, and director Jeff Fowler shared with me the behind-the-scenes story about its creation – particularly involving Jim Carrey’s contribution.
In Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Dr. Robotnick (portrayed by Jim Carrey) encounters his long-lost grandfather, Professor Gerald Robotnick (also played by Carrey). During their mission where they both wear specialized suits to navigate a room filled with lasers, an unforgettably amusing dance routine unexpectedly erupts. I found this scene so entertaining that when I interviewed director Jeff Fowler, I wanted to know more about how it was developed.
Apparently, it was actually Jim Carrey’s idea in the first place, as he told TopMob:
Among my favorite scenes too! The inspiration for that moment comes from Jim. In the initial film, he added a delightful touch by playing music, dancing in his lab, and then being interrupted by Stone. During one of our early discussions about movie three, he expressed his desire to dance again. I responded enthusiastically, “Let’s do it!” So, if we were going to repeat the dance scene, we decided to go all out and have not just one but two characters, Ivo and Gerald, performing a duet. It was an absolute joy to conceptualize this, to plan it. We had an exceptional choreography team, talented dancers. Everyone gave their best, resulting in a spectacular dance sequence.
As a film enthusiast, let me express that it didn’t surprise me one bit when I learned it was Jim Carrey’s brainchild to incorporate the dance sequence into the movie as a nod back to the earlier series. His comedic scene in the first film was already hilarious, but with a dance troupe bringing the choreography to life, an elaborate set design, and not one, but two Jim Carreys performing simultaneously, it took things to another level of outrageousness. In fact, I’d gladly shell out money again just to rewatch this scene. Given that Carrey is known for his hands-on approach to acting roles, it’s entirely fitting he’d up the ante for the third installment of the franchise.
Jim Carrey’s concepts for the character Robotnick and his grandfather have proven successful. Before the movie’s premiere, some critics claimed that Carrey outshone Keanu Reeves as Shadow and was indeed a major attraction due to his exceptional acting performance. Moreover, director Jeff Fowler has praised working with Carrey on set and mentioned how he consistently strives to excel in his roles, and this time, he managed to double the laughter factor.
In the final scenes of the movie, it seems unlikely that Robotnik (or his grandfather) will make a comeback. However, Jim Carrey has mentioned retirement and then returned for “Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” so who knows? Perhaps in “Sonic the Hedgehog 4,” we might be treated to another entertaining dance number by Mr. Carrey.
