‘I Cried Watching Her.’ Lisa Kudrow Has Been Rewatching Friends And Revealed The Episode That Made Her Emotional

As a gamer who’s spent countless hours rewinding and rewatching iconic sitcoms like Friends, I can confidently say that the show’s impact transcends the screen and seeps into our lives. The characters become our friends, their trials and triumphs echoing in our own lives.

Regardless of being absent from our screens for twenty years, “Friends” continues to be a show that countless viewers find irresistible to revisit. We fans can often recite entire dialogues or even full episodes due to our repeated viewings, but this isn’t the case for the cast members themselves. Actress Lisa Kudrow has confessed she struggles to recall filming many of the episodes, and it wasn’t until recently that she felt the urge to rewatch them. Upon doing so, she disclosed that there was one episode in particular that deeply moved her.

Lisa Kudrow, known for playing Phoebe Buffay on Friends, admitted she found it hard to watch herself on TV, even though the show is considered one of the greatest sitcoms ever made. However, following the death of her co-star Matthew Perry in October 2023, she began revisiting the series out of respect for him. Kudrow praised her fellow actors on the show, but it was Phoebe’s scenes that brought tears to her eyes. She shared this sentiment during an episode of the Armchair Expert podcast.

In this particular Friends episode, where Phoebe gets married, I’m currently engrossed. Her joy was so palpable that it brought tears to my eyes. I’ve rarely ever seen Phoebe looking as radiant and genuinely content as she did during her wedding.

In a delightful manner, that was one of the most charming reactions I’ve encountered, and it seemed many others felt the same way when Phoebe tied the knot with Mike (played by Paul Rudd) in the tenth season’s episode titled “The One with Phoebe’s Wedding.

It’s no wonder that Lisa Kudrow felt deeply connected to Phoebe, given that she essentially breathed life into her character for a full decade on television. By the time we first see Phoebe in Season 1, she had already faced numerous hardships – being abandoned by her father, estranged from her twin sister, and left homeless after her mother’s passing. So, when Phoebe finally found her own happiness, it must have been a profound sense of relief for the actress, as she expressed.

It really touched me. I was so happy for her.

In addition to the sad history of Phoebe and her family that we were previously aware of, it was later discovered during the series that her late mother wasn’t her biological mother. This shocking revelation came from a suicide note that her sister Ursula had never shown her. Furthermore, Ursula had sold Phoebe’s birth certificate, making her middle name unknown and causing Phoebe to believe she was a year younger than she truly was.

Mike Hannigan turned out to be an ideal match for Phoebe, almost like the ideal counterpart to her unconventional name, Princess Consuela Banana Hammock. It’s delightful to know that even after many years have passed, Lisa Kudrow continues to hold this view as well.
