‘I Didn’t Know They Were Gonna Go That Far’: Logan Writer Reacts To Hilarious Way Deadpool And Wolverine Poked Fun At The Hugh Jackman Movie’s Ending

As a long-time fan of the X-Men franchise, I must say that the latest Marvel movie, Deadpool & Wolverine, has truly outdone itself with its audacious opening sequence. Having watched Hugh Jackman‘s emotional swan song as Wolverine, Logan, just a few years ago, I was initially taken aback by the drastic shift in tone. But, upon reflection, I realized that this wasn’t a disrespectful mockery of Logan’s poignant ending, but rather a playful tribute to its greatness.

Warning: SPOILERS for Deadpool & Wolverine are ahead!

In 2017, when the film “Logan” was released, it was believed to mark Hugh Jackman’s last portrayal of Wolverine. However, Jackman later decided to reprise his role for the Marvel movie, “Deadpool & Wolverine.” To maintain the integrity of “Logan,” Jackman played a Wolverine from another universe, while his original character remained deceased. Interestingly, the third “Deadpool” film found a humorous way to reference “Logan’s” conclusion, and Michael Green, who co-wrote the script with James Mangold and Scott Frank, has revealed his reaction to this sequence.

To start off, let’s briefly review the events. After discovering that the death of Earth-10005’s Wolverine (the one from the movie ‘Logan’) led to the destruction of that universe, as planned by TVA agent Paradox, Ryan Reynolds’ character, Deadpool, utilized a TemPad to journey to Wolverine’s grave in North Dakota. Deadpool thought he could revive Wolverine by restarting his healing factor, but when he found the buried adamantium skeleton, he understood that was impossible. As TVA agents encircled him at the gravesite, Deadpool retaliated by eliminating them all using various parts of the skeleton, all while grooving to NSYNC’s “Bye Bye Bye.”

Absolutely, there’s quite a bit to process here, and Michael Green, who shared with IGN, mentioned that though he had heard a vague hint that the movie Logan would be referenced in the opening of Deadpool & Wolverine, he was genuinely taken aback by what actually played out on the screen when he watched it in the theater. In his own words:

Initially, people had cautioned me about the premiere of Deadpool & Wolverine, saying something along the lines of, ‘I’m not sure you’ll be a fan.’ However, I was confident in my prediction, and boy, was I wrong! I had no idea they were going to push it as far as they did.

The intense and emotional storyline of the movie “Logan” culminated in the death of Professor X, played by Patrick Stewart. Contrasting sharply with this somber tone, the opening credits sequence of “Deadpool & Wolverine” was quite a surprise, albeit an amusing one. Green went on to clarify that he didn’t view the latest MCU entry as disrespecting the ending of “Logan”.

As a devoted fan, I must clarify that their idea of unearthing him wasn’t intended to be taken literally, and it certainly wasn’t him coming back to life. Instead, it seemed more like they were grappling with the challenge of creating a sequel that lived up to their perception of how great Logan was – quite a compliment indeed! To me, it felt nothing but appreciative and respectful.

Michael Green himself found Deadpool & Wolverine an enjoyable experience, and mentioned that the audience in the cinema where he watched it were extremely enthusiastic about everything. He also noted that there were no jibes towards Green Lantern in the third installment, as he had co-written the disappointing film with Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim, and Michael Goldenberg. Given that Deadpool 2‘s end credits scene depicted Deadpool going back in time to kill Ryan Reynolds just before he was set to read the Green Lantern script for the first time, it’s clear that nothing could have surpassed that jab at the DC film.

As Deadpool & Wolverine’s theatrical run carries on, don’t hesitate to watch Logan using your Disney+ membership.
