With Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl now gaining attention worldwide, it appears that Netflix has managed to secure one of the funniest comedies for their 2025 lineup ahead of schedule. This highly anticipated movie is a Golden Globe nominee in the best animated motion picture category for 2025 and has won over fans like me who are long-time enthusiasts of Aardman Animations’ beloved characters. In fact, my appreciation for this film has grown even more after viewing an exclusive sneak peek at Feathers McGraw’s return, as shown in the clip above.
Just like the clever naming style seen in Wallace & Gromit’s adventures, the name given to the highlighted process is a witty play on words. So, if you ever find yourself at the Aardman Studios, be aware that when referring to “The LAV,” it’s actually short for the “Live Action Video booth.
While observing “Vengeance Most Fowl’s” production at work, it’s almost eerie how the final product mirrors the directorial movements of Nick Park and Merlin Crossingham. This is particularly noticeable when contrasting the LAV footage with Feathers McGraw’s in-film performance, known as the most challenging character to animate within W&G.
Here’s an image showing directors Nick Park and Feathers McGraw in a particularly intimidating instant.
From the materials provided, it’s evident that some of the most captivating scenes in the “Vengeance Most Fowl” trailer and final product draw significant live-action influence from both directors, Nick Park and Merlin Crossingham. Although this method isn’t novel when creating an animated spectacle like this one, I find it intriguing that the acting is being done by them instead of the voice actors.
On other occasions too, the directors might be the most fitting choices for the role. This is particularly relevant when considering the voiceless character of Gromit, who manages to convey so much without uttering a single word. I’ve learned this from my previous conversation with the directors of “Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl”. The topic of his expressive abilities even came up during that discussion.
Although director Merlin Crossingham doesn’t assign a specific vocal character to this silent canine guardian, he openly shared with TopMob that he handles this part quite verbosely.
When discussing Gromit’s performance with the animator, we often position ourselves in front of a live-action camera and use this time for rehearsal purposes. For instance, if Gromit appears to be looking at something, as I act it out, I vocalize the inner thoughts of Gromit, such as saying “What? Oh my goodness!” aloud. This helps me internalize where Gromit is mentally during his performance.
Even though the 2025 Golden Globes have passed, the journey towards the Academy Awards is still filled with vibrant possibilities. Netflix is determined to secure a nomination for “Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl“, which means we might catch glimpses of the creative process at Aardman Studios. I’m eagerly waiting for these insights, as I’m captivated by the behind-the-scenes look at the process that has kept this beloved stop-motion animation series thriving through decades of affection.
