I Don't Always Love Musical Episodes, But Grey's Anatomy Deserves A Redo After Latest Season 21 Casting

As a gamer with a heart for music and a soft spot for medical dramas, I can’t help but get excited about the latest news from Grey’s Anatomy! With Jason George returning and Michael Thomas Grant joining the cast as the new chaplain, James, it seems like things are heating up at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

As we eagerly await the arrival of “Grey’s Anatomy” in the 2024 TV lineup for Season 21, changes are afoot. Jason George is making a comeback to the medical drama post the finale of “Station 19” this spring, while Jake Borelli is bidding adieu as Levi Schmitt. A fresh face has been unveiled for the forthcoming season, and I can’t help but hope that music will once again resonate through Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. While “Grey’s Anatomy” may not boast a stellar history with musical episodes, could Michael Thomas Grant possibly join the cast without serenading us?

Michael Thomas Grant’s latest television appearance was on ABC with the series “The Rookie: Feds,” however, many may associate him with the character Leif from “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” due to its extensive singing scenes. According to TVLine, Grant has been tapped for a recurring role in “Grey’s Anatomy” Season 21, playing James, the new chaplain at the hospital. He is an openly gay Episcopal chaplain who is certain about his faith in his professional life but finds himself at a juncture when it comes to love in his personal affairs.

In the first season of “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist,” Grant made an appearance, but was promoted to a series regular for Season 2. After the musical comedy-drama was cancelled by NBC, he featured in the finale Christmas movie. Given that the show revolved around a woman who hears people’s feelings as songs and often includes dance routines, Grant had plenty of opportunities to sing and dance, portraying Zoey’s coworker Leif.

In a less impressive showing compared to the greatest musical episodes ever aired on Grey’s Anatomy (Season 10), I find myself eager for music to return in some capacity. It might seem surprising, given that a cast member from Zoey’s previously joined Grey’s Anatomy a few seasons back, but after viewing this clip featuring Michael Thomas Grant’s vocals, you’ll understand why I appreciate his singing talents.

If you haven’t seen the show “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist“, that clip might seem peculiar since it features a group of men singing the title song from “Jesus Christ Superstar” in an office environment. However, context or no context, I believe everyone can appreciate Michael Thomas Grant’s exceptional vocal performance and riffs!

As a gamer, I’m not advocating for Grey’s to turn into the zany world of Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist with Leif, but I do hope that his character as the chaplain at Grey Sloane might include some singing moments at least once. Now, I’m not saying hymns should be the next “Superstar” or any of the other incredible performances from ZEP, but they could certainly find a place in the ABC drama.

Discover the upcoming events for Michael Thomas Grant in “Grey’s Anatomy” when it returns for its Season 21 premiere on Thursday, September 26, at 10 p.m. ET on ABC. If you’re curious about “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist,” both seasons are available for streaming with a Peacock Premium subscription. For those interested in the musical episode of “Grey’s Anatomy,” it can be streamed through a Hulu subscription during Season 10.
