In its 26th season and still going strong in the 2025 TV lineup, “Law & Order: SVU” continues to captivate audiences. It’s astonishing to think that this series debuted in 1999, but Mariska Hargitay recalls her audition with Christopher Meloni as if it were just yesterday. Although NBC hasn’t confirmed a renewal for Season 27 yet, it appears to be only a matter of time. With Ice-T expressing optimism about the show’s longevity, one can only wonder what lies ahead in its future.
Ice-T has been a mainstay on SVU almost since its inception, joining as Detective Fin Tutuola in the second season. He is the second longest-serving cast member across the entire Law & Order franchise, trailing only Mariska Hargitay. With no signs of leaving anytime soon, Ice-T recently shared with Us Weekly his realistic estimation for how much longer he envisions the show running.
There’s no apparent obstacle preventing Law & Order: Special Victims Unit from running for up to 30 seasons. So long as Mariska Hargitay continues to be passionate about the show, I believe it will persist. Essentially, it’s her production, and she’s in the driver’s seat.
It’s not guaranteed that SVU will last another few years, but with Season 30 coming up soon, NBC appears to have plans to prolong the Law & Order series. The franchise’s longevity seems secure, as the actress playing the lead role, Mariska Hargitay, has shown no signs of leaving the show in the immediate future. She’s even expressed her enjoyment of starring on the show for over a quarter of a century and doesn’t seem ready to step away just yet.
Regrettably, the day will arrive when “Law & Order: SVU” wraps up its run. The series reached its 500th episode during Season 23, and given that reaching 1,000 episodes is highly unlikely, Season 30 could be feasible. It might even make sense to conclude at this number, although I don’t think “SVU” should end anytime soon in my view. However, the number of seasons “SVU” has aired for is quite exceptional. If it must come to an end, why not do so at a significant season, like Season 30?
It’s clear that the writers have many more tales to share, leaving fans eagerly anticipating each new episode. When the series eventually concludes, it seems highly probable that it will be under Mariska Hargitay’s conditions. It’s tough to envision Law & Order: Special Victims Unit without Mariska Hargitay and her character Olivia Benson, and for now, it appears the storyline is far from over – at least for the time being.
As a passionate movie enthusiast, I’m eagerly anticipating every moment of Season 26 of “Law & Order: SVU”. Fresh from its break, the series holds an air of mystery that keeps me on the edge of my seat. Catch it every Thursday at 9 p.m. ET on NBC, or stream it the next day with a Peacock subscription. The suspense is real!
