I Felt A Ton Of Nostalgia Watching Dancing With The Stars For The First Time In Years, But There's One Element I Appreciate So Much More Now

As a gamer who has navigated through countless virtual worlds, I must say that stepping back into reality and tuning into Dancing with the Stars after years of absence was like leveling up to a new dimension. The nostalgia hit me like a tidal wave, transporting me back to family gatherings around the TV screen, cheering for our favorite contestants. But what truly stood out this time was the constructive criticism the judges were dishing out.

In the past, I used to watch “Dancing with the Stars” when Derek and Julianne Hough were still pros instead of judges or hosts. The celebrities who participated included Zendaya, Shawn Johnson, and Jerry Rice, who danced in 2013, 2009, and 2006 respectively. It’s been quite some time since I last watched the ABC show. However, my interest was rekindled when Season 33 was scheduled for 2024, prompting me to tune in again after many years.

While watching the program, I found myself deeply touched by a wave of nostalgia. Yet, it was the improved understanding and admiration for the judges, along with their effective use of constructive critique, that truly caught my attention.

I Was Hit With A Tidal Wave Of Nostalgia Watching Dancing With The Stars For The First Time In Years

This year, the Olympics rekindled my interest in watching “Dancing with the Stars” again after a long break. The captivating performances of the men’s gymnastics team, particularly Stephen Nedoroscik on the pommel horse, and the entertaining TikTok videos from rugby player Ilona Maher, were the triggers. When I discovered that both these talented individuals had joined “DWTS,” I couldn’t resist the urge to tune in once more.

Recently, I Discovered the Activities Derek Hough and the “Dancing with the Stars” Judges Engage in During Ad Breaks, and It Turns Out to be Quite Amusing.

On Tuesday evening, around 9 p.m., I tuned into Disney+ to catch Dancing with the Stars live, or at least an hour delayed. This allowed me to skip commercials, evoking a sense of nostalgia as it reminded me of watching the show on my parents’ DVR.

Additionally, just like when I was young, watching the competitors present themselves and then perform on the dance floor reminded me of sitting with my family as we watched the show together.

I was trying to pick my top contenders for Season 33 (Stephen and Rylee all the way, by the way!). And I found myself smiling so big as I took in the other excellent first-week routines from celebs like Chandler Kinney, Joey Graziadei and Dwight Howard.

A different sense of nostalgia arose because I’m familiar with several professionals from “So You Think You Can Dance,” not “DWTS.” Despite never watching an entire season of their performances on ABC, I’ve only recalled Witney Carson, Jenna Johnson, and Alan Bersten from the Fox competition. Therefore, witnessing them as grown-ups was quite surprising.

Everywhere, I found myself reminiscing about the past. Yet, it was my fresh admiration for the judges that left me truly amazed.

However, I Have A Newfound Appreciation For The Judges And Their Constructive Criticism

As a kid, I found the judges’ comments utterly unappealing; all I yearned for was to watch the dancing. At that time, I struggled to discern between criticism and constructive criticism. Fast forward to today, in my role as a journalist who both edits and receives edits, I find myself appreciating constructive feedback immensely, and it’s incredibly beneficial for me.

It was terrific to observe Carrie Ann Inaba, Derek Hough, and Bruno Tonioli offering compliments and constructive advice. They praised Stephen Nedoroscik’s exuberance and suggested he work on pointing his toes, while encouraging Ilona Maher to leverage her athleticism in dance, as she possesses the ability to do so.

It’s impressive to see how skillful each of them is in providing genuine compliments and constructive criticism to the dancers. These comments not only serve as a tool for improvement in the coming weeks, but they also leave an impact on me as I observe their continued growth as dancers.

The interaction was entirely constructive, aimed at progress and betterment. And I adore that positive vibe!

As a gaming enthusiast, everything that unfolded was nothing short of thrilling, and I’m absolutely hooked! Without a doubt, I’ll be tuning in for the next installments of Dancing with the Stars, as they drop every Tuesday. And guess what? You can join me on this dance-filled journey too! Tune in to ABC and Disney+ at 8 p.m. ET, every Tuesday, to catch the newest episodes.
