As a long-time aficionado of horror films, I can confidently say that Dan Stevens has been quietly (or not so quietly) revolutionizing the genre for years. His recent role in “Cuckoo” is just the latest testament to his prowess as a scene-stealing horror icon.
CAUTION: The upcoming content may reveal significant plot points concerning the series Cuckoo and several horror movies featuring Dan Stevens. Proceed with care as you continue reading.
2021 has been quite an unusual and eerie year for horror films, and I’d argue that “Cuckoo” stands out as one of the most peculiar entries. Yet, I’d also classify Tilman Singer’s thriller – centering on an American teen entangled in a lethal, otherworldly predicament after her family relocates to a German resort – as one of the top horror films this year, with significant recognition going to Dan Stevens for his performance.
The English actor is best known for period dramas like Downton Abbey and Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast remake, for instance. Yet, his performance in Cuckoo is only the latest just the last few years that make him deserving of the horror movie icon status that he, unjustly, he has yet to be recognized as. So, as a horror fan, I thought I would try to give Stevens a boost in notoriety by highlighting a few of his most notable, scene-stealing contributions to the genre in recent memory, starting with the magic he works in the 2024 movie.
Dan Stevens Plays A Brilliantly Eccentric Villain In Cuckoo
In the opinion of many reviewers, including myself, the enigmatic plotline of “Cuckoo” is skillfully portrayed by Hunter Schafer’s compelling lead performance as Gretchen, a character who grapples with angst but also demonstrates resourcefulness, much like in a horror movie. However, it’s important to note that Dan Stevens is thought to have made the show even more captivating, potentially outshining Schafer and other cast members from “Euphoria“.
In 2021’s “I’m Your Man,” he adopts a German accent and brushes up on his native tongue, a decision made for the role of Herr König, the hotel manager in the Bavarian Alps who secretly protects a unique species of half-human, half-bird creatures. His lively and unapologetically absurd portrayal fits flawlessly with the film’s strange thriller genre, making it more enjoyable and less isolating for viewers, as I see it.
I Also Think Dan Stevens Is The Best Thing About Abigail
This year, Stevens wasn’t just involved with the new horror film “Cuckoo.” He also featured in Radio Silence’s multi-starred vampire movie, titled “Abigail.” In this production, he portrays “Frank,” one of six unidentified criminals engaged in a ransom scheme involving the kidnapping of a young girl who is not as she appears.
As a devoted viewer, I can’t help but sing praises for Stevens’ exceptional performance in the movie. Amidst the grandiose violence and Alisha Weir’s remarkable portrayal in the lead role, it’s Stevens who truly steals the show. His talent was evident even before he unleashed his full potential as the vampiric antagonist, Frank, a former corrupt detective. Remarkably, he managed to breathe charm into a character that was otherwise reprehensible, leaving me captivated throughout.
His Cabinet Of Curiosities Role Was Really Something Else, Too
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but highlight one of the most chilling moments of Stevens’ acting prowess – his role in an exceptional episode titled “Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities,” directed by Ana Lily Amirpour. In the hauntingly titled “The Outside,” Kate Micucci portrays Stacey, a woman driven to extremes as she yearns to belong among her colleagues. Desperate for acceptance, she repeatedly applies a mysterious lotion called Alo Glo, oblivious to its detrimental impact on her own well-being.
It’s quite clear why she felt compelled to buy and keep using that degrading product once you take into account who initially persuaded her to do so: Dan Stevens. His captivatingly unsettling portrayal as an infomercial host who communicates with Stacey via the television is one of the most brilliant and impactful performances in Netflix’s inventive horror anthology TV series.
Dan Stevens’ distinctive acting style in horror films has added an intriguing dimension to the genre, as illustrated by some of the most remarkable recent examples. There are many other notable performances to discover, like his starring role in 2014’s “The Guest,” and more are on the horizon with his upcoming collaboration with Al Pacino in “The Ritual.
