I Finally Watched Terrifier, And There's One Big Scene That Grossed Me Out The Most

As a seasoned horror enthusiast and parent of three, I find myself in a peculiar predicament – one that seems to defy the natural progression of growing older. Despite my advanced age and responsibilities, I find myself cowering behind my hands during the most gruesome scenes, much like a young Philip Sledge did while watching “IT”. The violence in movies like “Terrifier” is so intense that it manages to shock even the most hardened of us, making us question our choice to subject ourselves to such gore.

Just now, I managed to catch up with the movie “Terrifier” after years of hearing how fantastic it is for horror enthusiasts. Knowing that it’s an intense 84-minute ride filled with excessive gore and gruesome death scenes, I made sure to watch when my spouse was away and the children were asleep. However, one particular scene stood out as particularly revolting and slightly unsettling. It features Art the Clown employing a specific hand tool in an excruciatingly painful manner that still gives me chills.

Over the years, I’ve been quite accustomed to horror movies, even enjoying scenes filled with grisly violence and gore. However, the gruesome content in Damien Leone’s 2018 micro-budget slasher movie tested my limits like never before. Join me as we dissect that incredibly disturbing scene, along with a few others that made me question whether I should keep my eyes open or closed.

Terrifier Is Pretty Much 84 Minutes Of Gnarly, Disgusting Death Scenes

In the film “Terrifier,” every moment is utilized effectively, as demonstrated by the gruesome opening scene where a TV host suffers a grisly fate reminiscent of Prince Oberyn on “Game of Thrones,” with her eyes being gouged out and face crushed. For the subsequent 84 minutes, director Damien Leone devises a series of creative (and economical) methods for Art the Clown, portrayed by David Howard Thornton, to torment, murder, and disfigure an array of victims.

In a surprising twist of events, the pizza restaurant served as an eerie backdrop for a series of gruesome murders, filled with dark humor and bizarre killings that would make your skin crawl. From the swarming bugs in the building to the chilling parking garage, each location was the grisly scene of a victim’s demise at the hands of a twisted serial killer. I must admit, despite my initial horror, I couldn’t help but find myself laughing along as the events unfolded.

But there was one scene that really got me…

The Scene That Grossed Me Out The Most Was Without A Doubt Dawn Being Painstakingly Cut In Half

In a stark contrast, none of those other scenes compare to the one where Dawn (Catherine Corcoran) was gruesomely dismembered by the Power Team, as if they were sawing and tearing her apart. However, rather than the muscle-bound members of the Power Team discussing the power of Jesus following this display of strength, Art merely chuckled, made funny expressions, and continued his tour of mayhem and homicide.

The screams, the sound of rusty steel to flesh and bone, the blood (so much blood), the random body parts flying about and the sight of someone being pulled in two while still alive was just absolutely wild. I would go back and revisit it, but I think I’m good for now.

I Had No Knowledge Of The Scene Beforehand But I Knew What Was About To Go Down When Art Pulled Out An Old Saw

I managed to steer clear of any spoilers before viewing “Terrifier“. In fact, I didn’t even glance at the original trailer until after my viewing, quite a challenge given that this film is already more than five years old by now. However, I succeeded, and I am incredibly grateful for it. The suspense would have been lost if I knew in advance about the gruesome scene where a character is sawed in half lengthwise.

As soon as I noticed Dawn dangling upside-down and Art taking out a saw from his bag of items, I quickly figured out that I needed to grab the remote control to pause the movie if one of my children came downstairs (it’s happened before). However, even in my imagination, nothing could have prepared me for what Art went on to do only a short while later.

I’m A 36-Year-Old Father Of Three And I Still Watched Dawn Get Sawed In Half With My Hands Over My Face

The grisly, intense saw scene wasn’t the scariest horror movie moment I’ve encountered, but it was undoubtedly one of the most brutal. To be honest, I spent a significant portion of it hiding my eyes behind my hands, which probably made me appear more like a 3-year-old child watching the IT miniseries rather than a 36-year-old father of three.

Observing Dawn being meticulously dismantled, reminiscent of a prime rib carving at Christmas, reminded me of the response I had when viewing Jeremy Saulnier’s Green Room, specifically the part where Anton Yelchin’s character’s arm comes close to being severed by a machete. Just as before, I watched that scene with my fingers shielding my eyes.

But I’m Also Excited To See What Else The Terrifier Franchise Has In Store For Me

However, let me express my eagerness to continue the Terrifier series, eagerly anticipating more suspenseful, spine-tingling moments courtesy of Art the Clown. Just as I did with Terrifier, I’ll approach Terrifier 2 and Terrifier 3 without any spoilers or trailers, ensuring another series of shocking and grotesque surprises!

From what I’ve gathered, it seems the subsequent two films reportedly have bigger budgets and longer durations, but beyond that, I’m not privy to much information. To set the record straight, that’s about the extent of my knowledge. Yet, this ambiguity makes me all the more intrigued and eager for the ride, even if it means I might need to squint a little harder to catch every detail!

But Before I Go, What’s The Deal With All The Eye Scenes?

Regarding the portrayal of eyes in films, I’m curious about Damien Leone’s frequent use of sequences where characters experience gruesome eye injuries such as gouging or smashing, resulting in a bloody and goopy mess. There have been many chilling eye scenes in movies over time, and Terrifier might be a good candidate to contribute to this collection.

The film begins with a gruesome murder scene, involving a pizzeria worker whose eyes are forcibly removed (fortunately not shown on screen), and his disfigured face later used as a candlestick. Later, the character Victoria (Samantha Scaffidi) experiences a horrific ordeal where Art removes her eye and significant portions of her face. This seems to set a record for the number of eye injuries in a single horror movie.

Based on the enthusiastic reviews for Terrifier 3, its “delightfully cruel” nature suggests an exhilarating horror experience lies ahead. All that’s left is ensuring I don’t delay viewing it when it hits theaters in 2024.
